When I was in middle school, I was given lunch money and no supervision for the first time. That’s why for three years straight, I had a soft pretzel and a side of French fries for lunch. Hey, it was the new millennium and things were wild!
While I have a slightly more balanced diet now, I still absolutely love soft pretzels and enjoy them whenever we go to the mall- or to Disneyland! But now? I make homemade soft pretzels, too with a secret ingredient you can find at grocery stores!

These soft pretzels are SO easy to make because instead of making your own pretzel dough, you start with store-bought pizza dough. These pizza dough pretzels take barely any work to make but taste like the real thing- no active dry yeast needed or stand mixer required!
With just a few simple steps and in about 20 minutes total, you’ll have a whole batch of homemade pizza dough pretzels ready for your family- or yourself!

Can I Use Homemade Pizza Dough?
If you really want to you can use your own pizza dough, but that definitely takes extra work. Using premade pizza dough makes this so much quicker and easier! If you do want to go with homemade pizza dough, just make sure it’s not too sticky or wet so you don’t have trouble shaping the pretzels.
Can I Make Pizza Dough Pretzels Ahead of Time?
Totally! Just make them according to directions and make sure to store them in an airtight container at room temperature for a few hours or in the fridge if waiting longer than that. When ready to serve, preheat the oven to 350 and bake for 5-10 minutes, until heated through.

Can I Freeze a Batch of Pizza Dough Pretzels?
Yes! If you keep these stored in an airtight container or freezer bag they will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, first thaw the pretzels in the fridge overnight and then follow the above reheating directions!
Can I Make Mini Pretzels Instead of Full-Size Pretzels?
Yes, just make sure to adjust your baking time accordingly! The smaller the pretzels are, the faster they’ll bake so be sure to keep an eye on them! Homemade pretzel bites are a fun snack too, especially if you have tiny mouths to feed.

What Dipping Sauces Should I Serve with Homemade Soft Pretzels?
Soft pretzels are delicious with a variety of fun dips, like queso dip, marinara sauce, mustard, honey mustard dip, cheese sauce or whatever you like! You can even top them with parmesan cheese instead of or in addition to the coarse salt!
How Can I Make Sweet Soft Pretzels?
Cinnamon sugar pretzels are a great way to make this recipe even sweeter! Instead of finishing with coarse salt, coat the finished pretzels with that thin layer of melted butter and then sprinkle with a cinnamon-sugar mixture!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Add the water and baking soda to a large pot and cook over high heat until you have boiling water, then reduce to medium heat

Unroll the pizza dough {I recommend you do this on a lightly floured surface} and cut the dough ball into one-inch strips.

Roll each strip into a 12-inch long rope.

Fold the rope in half and twist the ends together in the center, then fold the twist down to form a pretzel shape.

Press the ends of the pretzel down to hold them in place.

Place each pretzel in the warm water baking soda bath for 30 seconds, then use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain.

Place each pretzel on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and brush with egg wash

Bake for 10-15 minutes, until deep golden brown
Brush with melted butter and top with coarse salt before serving. Enjoy!
