RSV Awareness & Prevention Tips

As a kid, I was sick a lot. I had strep throat for so long that it gave me rheumatic fever &I still have a heart murmur because of it. Luckily, Shane didn’t get my immune system & in his entire 3 and a half years he’s had two minor colds, each lasting about two days, and that’s it. I don’t know how, but he escaped ever getting RSV. This is especially impressive since about 2/3 of babies get it before their first birthday- and by their second, almost 100% of children have had it.

With this large number of children being affected, it’s astounding that only 1/3 of moms have even heard of RSV! Serious RSV infection is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, responsible for 125,000 hospitalizations & up to 500 infant deaths each year. So what is RSV?

- Coughing or wheezing that does not stop
- Fast or troubled breathing
- Spread-out nostrils and/or a caved-in chest when trying to breathe
- Bluish color around the mouth or fingernails
- Fever (especially if it is over 100.4°F in infants under 3 months of age)

While most cases of RSV will be mild, there is no treatment and it will have to run its course. That said, even a mild case can be spread to other children, and their case may be more severe. It’s very important to be vigilant so that you don’t spread the virus to other babies. Be sure to wash your hands & your child’s hands, and ask others to do the same.

“RSV Season” is November to March, so if you have a baby right now you need to be extra careful to watch out for others with the above symptoms & avoid letting your baby come into contact with them. Be sure to keep toys, clothes, blankets and sheets clean & avoid crowds and other sick children during RSV season.

Take the Listerine 21 Day Challenge to Help Your Mouth- and Kids in Need

Ready to hear something crazy {&totally embarrassing}? I went to the dentist a few months ago- for the first time since I was three. When I was growing up, we didn’t have dental insurance &couldn’t really afford to go out of pocket, so that explains the first 18 years. &Since then, I’ve still not had dental insurance, and since I have been a starving college student & then a new mom {with all the costs of a new baby attached} back-to-back, I couldn’t bring myself to spend the money to go- especially since I was convinced I’d get horrible news from avoiding the dentist for so long.

Luckily, the dental hygienist spent an hour praising my good genes & telling me to thank them for the lack of issues. While my wisdom teeth need to come out, like, yesterday, I don’t have any real issues at all. She did notice though that my gums are very sensitive, and told me how to fix that so they don’t hurt or bleed so much: floss, and mouthwash.

Now, I already use mouthwash every night, but I don’t swish for the full recommended 30 seconds. &While I could lie and say that I floss every day, in reality it’s more like once a week when I’m not too tired to care.

That’s why I’m taking the LISTERINE 21 Day Challenge! It takes about three weeks to form a habit, so LISTERINE is encouraging people to commit to spending the next 21 days rinsing with mouthwash twice a day, for thirty seconds each time. In just two weeks, LISTERINE can make your gums up to 5 times healthier- and if you continue through the challenge & keep going, you’ll have up to 9 times healthier gums in just 4 weeks.

21 day challenge

After the 21 day challenge, your gums should have reduced swelling and should not bleed when you brush or floss, and your mouth should feel fresher and cleaner for longer. There’s definitely enough reasons there to start a new routine! But starting any habit isn’t easy, which is why LISTERINE has a fun reminder app on Facebook to help you stay on track! And I’m planning on keeping my tools right in plain sight until my new routine is second nature.

You can get your kids involved, too! LISTERINE has a mouth rinse for kids 6 & up and while Shane isn’t old enough to use it yet, he is old enough to floss- something that we aren’t great with, since he hates using it & usually it’s such a battle that we end up skipping it. But we hung a fun chart in the bathroom for Shane to keep track of when he brushes & flosses, twice each day, and since he loves marking off charts I am hoping it encourages him to do it! &That same LISTERINE app on Facebook comes with a fun “My Pet Mouth” game for kids to help them remember to use rinse twice a day, every day! To play, they have to swish their pet mouth every morning and evening to earn coins & purchase items to improve their health & happiness.

Need another reason to take the challenge? For every person who signs up for the challenge, the LISTERINE Brand will make a contribution to help Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program to help their goal of connecting 210,000 children with needed oral health services in 2013. Since oral disease is now the most chronic childhood illness in the U.S., affecting children of all backgrounds, but especially the millions who are unable to afford or get access to regular professional care. Since I was one of those kids, it definitely means a lot to me that LISTERINE is helping to make this happen!

Will you be taking the 21 Day Challenge?

Our Pull-Ups Potty Party!

I’ve been sharing our successes & set backs with potty training a lot lately, because that’s just the stage of childhood that Shane is in right now. While I never force him to sit on the potty, we’ve been trying a lot of methods to encourage him. First, we managed to get him to stop using diapers as a crutch. &Now that he’s in Pull-Ups, we’re one step closer to potty training success.

To get Shane exclusively into Pull-Ups, I started warning him shortly before we ran out of diapers that once we ran out, they were gone. He reluctantly let me put a Pull-Up on him & from then on, he was fine with ditching the diaper. So to try to get him to then ditch the Pull-Ups and go on the real potty, I started giving him a head’s up that once he had his “Potty Party”, it’d be time to start focusing on the potty.

pull-ups party

So what’s a Potty Party? Pull-Ups is encouraging families to celebrate their child’s “First Flush” with a celebration just for them. Whether it’s just you & your child with noisemakers or a full blown party, getting your child excited about using the potty is the first step to potty training success.

Shane asked about his Potty Party every day for almost two weeks. He knew his friends would be there & that we’d be celebrating him, so he was beyond excited. He helped me stuff favor bags that we threw together with stuff that Shane picked out for his friends, and he helped me pick a dessert to bring {we went with a giant tray of brownies}. When the night before arrived, he could barely sleep & kept asking who would be at his Potty Party.

Pull-Ups Party Packs

Pull-Ups was generous enough to send me some great Potty Party packs to give our guests, including party hats & noisemakers, a coupon book with tons of savings, a voucher for a free photo book {great for recording memories of the potty party!} and some reward stickers & charts for potty training. It also had a download code for their new Pull-Ups Big Kid App which is loaded with tools, tips and games for potty training kiddos & their parents!

Potluck lunch

We did a potluck style lunch and had tons of kid favorites like mac & cheese and hot dogs! We of course had some yummy food for the grown-ups, too, like the delicious chicken salad lettuce wraps and fruit salad.

The kids had so much fun playing with the noise blowers! All of Shane’s girl friends are already potty trained, but the boys are like Shane & are still fighting it. But everyone had fun celebrating!

Shane brownies

Shane’s favorite part, of course, was eating brownies!

So did it work? Kind of. It definitely made him realize that it’s time for him to start using the potty, but now he keeps telling me that after he has another Potty Party, he’ll start using the potty. I’m fairly certain it’s just a ploy to get another big brownie, though.

I’m sure that when he’s ready, he’ll make the switch. &You’d better believe that we’ll be celebrating then!!!

Be sure to check out Pull-Ups on Facebook for more assistance in potty-training! &Don’t forget, you can still enter the sweepstakes until February 28th to enter to win a getaway to Orlando!

Join Pull-Ups in Times Square on January 29th & Enter to Win!

You may have seen the adorable Pull-Ups commercials lately where they throw a parade for a little boy in honor of his “First Flush”. If you haven’t, it’s cute &worth a look:

On January 29th, Pull-Ups is throwing a real celebration in Times Square to help parents & their little ones to start off potty training in a fun way! There will be a giant potty, live performers and a spectacular light-up billboard celebration to commemorate the big step of their “First Flush”.

first flush

Even better? You can be a part of the celebration! Pull-Ups is asking parents to share their tot’s First Flush celebration moment for the chance to be featured on a Times Square billboard during the First Flush celebration. When you submit your child’s First Flush moment, you’ll also be entered to win a 4-day family fun getaway to Orlando! {You can enter here!}

Speaking of Pull-Ups, I am proud to report that Shane has now finally ditched his diapers & made the switch to Pull-Ups! He is still wearing his night time diapers, but that’s just because we couldn’t find the night time Pull-Ups in his size at the store. He actually really wants them though because they glow in the dark!

To get Shane to switch to Pull-Ups, I just told him that when we ran out of diapers, we weren’t getting any more. I told him this for a few days so that he was ready, and then when the time came, he was sad to be without his diapers {he used to use them as a security item, which was a major reason potty training has been so rough} but he eventually embraced his Pull-Ups. Now the trick is to warn him that when we’re out of Pull-Ups, it’s time for the big boy potty!

Did you do anything to celebrate your little one’s “First Flush”?

Wordless Wednesday: Getting Over Fears

Shane got his very first motorized vehicle this Christmas from his Papa & Nomi {Justin’s parents}. He was super excited about it, but much less excited to actually ride it. In fact, he would only ride it when Daddy pushed him instead of using the pedals because the noise from the motor freaked him out.

So when Justin & I came to pick him up on Sunday {after an open house at our wedding venue & a movie} we were happily surprised to see him riding it! Shane gets anxious about stuff a lot so whenever he faces his fears, it warms my Mommy heart.
