We knew it would happen sooner or later, and that time is now- summer has arrived! While this year summer comes with a whole host of differences from years before, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed- IT IS HOT.
We live in Vegas, where most of the summer includes either temperatures above 105 degrees or monsoon rains, and nothing in between. Those rainy days are few and tend to happen in July, but the rest of the summer brings with it a hot {yes, dry} heat and forces us inside every year, not just during the summer of social distancing.
Of course, there are some things that make it a little easier to deal with the heat. There are pools and splash pads and of course, ice cream! After all, is it really summer without ice cream??
To keep you cool during the hot summer months, and especially to prepare you for the 4th of July in all of it’s red, white, and blue glory, I thought it’d be the perfect time to share this Homemade Kool-Aid Ice Cream Recipe!
But first, here are the answers to some common questions about this homemade ice cream recipe using Kool-Aid!
Can you use other flavors of Kool-Aid?
If you aren’t into the flavors of Kool-Aid used here, you can totally swap them out for your favorites- just keep in mind they won’t match the whole patriotic thing. But it’s way more important that you like the taste than the color!
Do you need an ice cream maker to make this?
NO! This Kool-Aid Ice Cream is an ice cream recipe without an ice cream maker. I don’t even own one, though admittedly I’ve been eyeing one since we’re going to be spending so much time at home this year.
Is this ice cream dairy free?
Unfortunately no, and I totally understand- I am lactose intolerant so I approach this with caution and a dose of Lactaid 🙂
Is this recipe vegan or vegetarian?
This recipe is not vegan, as it contains dairy products, but it IS vegan! Kool-Aid brand products ARE vegan, though if you go off-brand I’d maybe double check if that’s a concern.
Is this a quick homemade ice cream recipe?
This recipe is fairly quick to make- it should take about 10 minutes. At the end though, it will need to freeze for 6-8 hours so you’ll definitely need to plan ahead.

Homemade Kool-Aid Ice Cream
This delicious, homemade ice cream can be made with just a few ingredients- you don't even need an ice cream maker!
Ingredients
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream, cold
- 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 packet mixed berry Kool Aid
- 1 packet cherry Kool Aid
Instructions
Pour the heavy whipping cream into the bowl of stand mixer. Whip the cream on medium high speed until thickened and soft peaks begin to form.
Continue beating while adding the sweetened condensed milk in a stead stream. Beat just until stiff peaks begin to form, being careful not to over mix.
Separate the cream mixture evenly into two bowls. Add the mixed berry Kool-Aid to one bowl and the cherry Kool-Aid to the other bowl. Fold the Kool-Aid into the cream mixture until well combined.
Spoon the cream mixtures into a freezer-safe container, alternating between red and blue. After all the ice cream has been added to the container, use a knife to swirl the two colors together.
Place a lid on the container or cover tightly with plastic wrap and freeze for six to eight hours. When ready to serve, allow the container to sit at room temperature for five to 10 minutes to soften the
ice cream, making it easier to scoop.
