Fall is just around the corner and around here, that means we’re about to start taking our annual trips to the apple orchard! Ever since the kids were little, we’ve always gone to our local orchard as soon as the apples are ready so we can stock up and make all of our favorite apple flavored treats.

One of those favorites is Caramel Apple Turnovers- and while you can totally make them with those orchard-fresh apples they are even faster and easier to make with one special shortcut ingredient: apple pie filling!
Whether you want to make these with fresh apples or take a shortcut with the filling {which is what I typically do} and save your fresh picked apples for another recipe {check the suggestions down below!} these are still a pretty easy recipe either way.
They’re a great way to get the taste of caramel apples without breaking your teeth, and they’re a perfect snack for little hands!
What pastry is apple turnover made from?
Apple turnovers are always made from puff pastry, which is what makes this such an easy recipe- you can just thaw a couple of puff pastry sheets and get to work baking!
Puff pastry can of course be made from scratch, but the frozen stuff has always worked great. If you decide to make yours from scratch I’d love to hear your experience!

Can I use fresh apples for this recipe? What is the best apple to use for apple turnovers?
You can totally opt out of using the apple pie filling and instead use real apples! You can use any variety but I’d recommend a sweet one, like Fiji or Gala. If you like things a little less sweet Granny Smith Apples are fine too!
Using real apples? You’ll need 2- peel them, cut them into pieces less than 1/4 inch thick, and cook them in melted butter for a few minutes until they begin to soften. Add about 1/4 cup of brown sugar, a pinch of salt, a small squeeze of lemon juice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Mix well and cook on low to medium for about 5 minutes. Cool in refrigerator before using in turnovers!
Why is it called an apple turnover?
The name simply comes from needing to turn the pastry over the filling to close it! You won’t need to turn anything over in the oven, that’s just a reference to folding and sealing them!

Caramel Apple Turnovers
Want to make super easy fall baked goods? Try these apple turnovers! This recipe uses two shortcuts- apple pie filling and premade puff pastry- so you have a delicious semi homemade fall dessert in just minutes!
Ingredients
- 1 package (two sheets) frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 can apple pie filling
- 1 egg, beaten (optional)
- Water
- Caramel sauce for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Unroll the puff pastry dough on a lightly floured surface.
- Cut each sheet into four squares.
- Add a small amount of apple pie filling to half of each square. You can cut the apples in the pie filling into small pieces if the slices are too large.
- Dip your finger in water and rub the water along the edges of the square. Fold the side of the puff pastry square over the top of the apples to form a triangle shape. Press the sides together with a fork.
- After all the turnovers have been folded, use a knife to slice the top of each triangle to vent.
- Brush the top of each turnover with beaten egg, if desired, to add a golden color to each pastry.
- Bake the turnovers in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown.
- Transfer the cooked turnovers to a wire cooling rack to cool. When the pastries are safe to touch, drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of each turnover. Serve warm or room temperature.
