One of our favorite fall traditions is to head to the local apple orchard. Here in Vegas, there isn’t a lot of opportunity to eat truly local foods- but every fall, we head to the orchard to pick apples directly from the trees. My kids love it- and they especially love the apple cider donuts we get before we leave!

While I can’t compete with fresh apple cider donuts made at an apple orchard, I can come close with these delicious Apple Fritters! They can be made using any kind of apple {our orchard has Granny Smith but you can use any kind from your local grower or the grocery store, too} and you can even make a couple of small alterations to them to make them fit your dietary needs.

No matter how you make them, they’ll always taste like Autumn!

Apple Fritters
Makes 8 to 10 fritters
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 3 minutes
Ingredients for the Fritters:
3 to 4 apples, peeled and diced
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup baking flour
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup milk
1 egg
Oil for frying
Ingredients for the Glaze:
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
3-4 tablespoons milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla

Instructions for the Fritters:
- In a deep frying pan, add at least two inches of oil and warm over medium heat to 370 degrees.
- Combine apples, sugar, and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Toss to coat the apples and set aside.
- In a large bowl, add the flour, brown sugar, salt, and baking powder. Whisk to combine.
- In a small bowl or large measuring up, whisk together the milk and egg. Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
- Pour the apples into the batter and stir to coat all the apples.
- Scoop ¼ cup of batter into the heated oil and cook until golden brown, around 3 minutes. Flip the fritter halfway through to ensure even cooking.
- Place the cooked fritters on a wire rack to cool.
Instructions for the Glaze:
- Whisk together the powdered sugar, three tablespoons of milk, and vanilla in a medium bowl until a smooth glaze forms. Add more milk if the glaze is too thick, 1/2 TBSP at a time.
- When the desired consistency is reached, spoon the glaze over the top of the warm fritters. Allow the glaze to set before serving.
Alterations: To make these gluten-free, just sub out the flour for a gluten-free baking flour. Want to make them lactose-free? I use LACTAID in place of milk in the glaze and the batter- it works the same as traditional milk, just without the lactose!
