It’s almost Valentine’s Day! In our family, we don’t really do a whole lot for this particular holiday- at least, my husband and I don’t. Since the kids usually get all sugared up at school during Valentine’s Day parties, we usually just buy the kids a small gift and I make some sort of cute Valentine’s Day snack.
This year, however, things are a little different. Our kids are still virtual learning so there won’t be any Valentine’s Day parties- no Valentine’s Day cards or treats.
So, I’m stepping up our home celebrations! We’ll be playing games and eating treats and sharing the love all day!
If you’re looking for a delicious and easy Valentine’s Day dessert, give these Cherry Hand Pies a try! They’re even heart-shaped for Valentine’s Day!
How to Change the Flavor of these Hand Pies
While cherry is perfect for this Valentine’s Day themed recipe- it is, after all, red- cherry just isn’t everyone’s thing. You can still follow these same directions to get absolutely delicious hand pies in whichever flavor you prefer by swapping out the pie filling!
I have seen a huge variety of pie filling at just a regular grocery store, including apple pie, blueberry pie, strawberry pie, and peach pie. You can use any of those to customize these to your liking!
Do These Hand Pies Have to be Heart Shaped?
Whether you want to skip the heart because it’s not Valentine’s Day when you make these or because you don’t have a heart shaped cookie cutter, you can totally make these round instead.
My tip for nice, round hand pies is to either use {affiliate link} a large biscuit cutter if you have one or a large mason jar lid if you don’t!
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! For this recipe, I’d suggest letting them help with:
- Cutting hearts out with cookie cutter
- Adding spoonfuls of pie filling to crusts
- Sealing edges with a fork
- Brushing on egg {make sure to wash hands after!}
- Sprinkling with sugar
I’d also suggest that you help a little extra with the oven parts, and use your own discretion for how much of this process your kids can handle based on their age and skill level.
