Last month, I posted a couple of recipes for homemade hot cocoa bombs that you can DIY at home this Christmas time and you guys can’t get enough of them! {If you missed them, check out the Homemade Hot Cocoa Bombs recipe and Grinch Hot Cocoa Bombs recipe!}
I don’t know about you but I’ve been having SO much fun making and using these DIY hot cocoa bombs. Making my own hot chocolate bombs is so much cheaper than buying them at the store so we can feel free to indulge in them a little extra- it is the holiday season, after all!
Now that Christmas is just a week away, I wanted to share one more special kind of hot cocoa bomb that means a little bit more to me and brings me back to my childhood.
When I was little, we would make a long drive out to see my Grandpa a couple of times a year at his house in California. One of the things I remember most about our visits was the never-empty bowl of chocolate mints.
I had never had that particular flavor combo before and I loved it so much I ate too many and got a stomachache. But now every time I have chocolate mint, I think of my Grandpa!
Well anyway, these homemade hot cocoa bombs are sure to be a hit with anyone in your house who loves mint chocolate.
This recipe is great for Christmas but would be a great way to stay warm throughout the winter! {In fact, these or the other hot cocoa bombs recipes would make a great holiday gift!}
What’s the right way to use hot cocoa bombs- stir in or pour over?
Hot cocoa bombs have taken the internet by storm this season and there’s one question I see all the time- what’s the best way to use hot cocoa bombs?
Should you warm up your milk first and add your hot cocoa bomb in, stirring it until it explodes and melts? Or should you put your hot cocoa bomb in first and pour hot milk over it?
The answer is there’s no right answer. It works BOTH ways, and you’ll have to figure out which way you prefer.
Personally, I usually add the bombs into already warm milk. I usually warm each person’s milk up individually since the kids don’t want theirs as hot as the adults, so I like the freedom doing it this way gives me- plus then I don’t have to worry about pouring hot liquids next to children.
BUT! If you’d rather pour your hot milk over your hot cocoa bombs that is totally fine too, just watch out for hot splashes!

I have a few tips for making these into a great homemade Christmas gift! Click on the links to go right to the items on Amazon.
To make these into a bigger gift, put together a gift basket featuring {almost} everything they’ll need: I wouldn’t give milk as a gift because it can go bad and people might need specific kinds of milk, but you can give everything else!
A little basket with a holiday mug, some cute holiday themed stirrers, maybe a movie to watch {or a coupon for a digital movie rental} and maybe even some snacks!
Want to keep it simple? These are a great gift as-is. Just grab some treat bags {clear or holiday themed}, tie it with a little ribbon, and you’re good to go!
Tip: If you’re going to be making a lot of these, I suggest getting an extra mold or two since the chocolate has to set each time.
Step by Step Photos
Since these are unlike most recipes you’ve probably made before, below are step by step photos you can references while making these! Follow the steps on the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full instructions!
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! For this recipe, I’d suggest letting them help with:
- Microwaving the chocolate
- Stirring the chocolate
- Filling the molds
- Adding the cocoa mix and marshmallows for the filling
- Adding the drizzle on top
If your kids are younger, you’ll want to use your own judgement to see if they can handle using melted chocolate. It gets warm but not too hot, but it does make a MESS.
Older kids can probably do all the steps with little help and little mess, but keep that in mind for younger kids.

Mint Chocolate Hot Cocoa Bombs
These mint chocolate hot cocoa bombs are SO much fun to use! Just add hot milk and watch marshmallows, mint chocolate and hot chocolate mix come out like magic.
Ingredients
- 1 12-ounce package dark chocolate chips
- 1 packet instant cocoa mix
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- 1/3 cup mint baking chips
- 6 cups hot milk to make the bombs
Instructions
- Place the dark chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate chips are fully melted.
- Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated.
- Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs.
- Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
- When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with mint baking chips and marshmallows.
- Reheat the chocolate in 15 second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam. Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed.
- Melt the white chocolate chips in 15 second intervals until melted, then place the remaining chocolate in a piping bag. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs and decorate with remaining mint pieces.
- Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour.
- To make the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug. Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate*. When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.
- *Alternatively, heat hot milk to desired temperature and add hot cocoa bomb. Stir as needed to melt and combine the bomb.
