A couple of weeks ago I shared a delicious Homemade Hot Cocoa Bombs recipe and we’ve been really enjoying using our own DIY hot cocoa bombs. But since we have a lot of time on our hands this winter, it seemed inevitable that we’d try a few more takes on these delicious, easy ways to make your own hot cocoa bombs at home- like this easy Grinch treats!
When I was a kid, I had two Christmas movies I had to watch every single year or it just wouldn’t feel like the holidays. Back then, I had to watch the original, animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the claymation Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer- I was obsessed with the Island of Misfit Toys!
My list of must-watch holiday movies has grown by a lot since then- including a new version of the Grinch! I love the new animated one from Illumination- catch it on Netflix if you haven’t seen it!
Anyway, inspired by the Grinch and all his shenanigans- and the most heart-warming {or I suppose, heart-growing} part at the end- these Grinch Inspired DIY Homemade Hot Cocoa Bombs are sure to help your heart grow three sizes with every sip of hot chocolate!
Is it easy to make your own homemade Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Like I shared in my last post, these are so easy to make! I think the hardest part is waiting for the chocolate to set- they smell so good while making them I didn’t want to wait any longer!
Another thing that can make this even easier is buying multiple molds if you plan on making quite a few. If you’re just making some for movie night one mold will do just fine, but if you’re making a lot for easy delicious homemade gifts or so that you have a bunch of ready to use hot cocoa bombs, then you might want to buy a couple of extra molds since you have to wait for the chocolate to set each time. {And then re-melt the chocolate to make the next batch.}
How Do You Make these Green? Do they HAVE to be green?
While you could always use white chocolate and add a little green food coloring gel, I recommend starting right off the bat with green candy melts. Adding food coloring gel to melting chocolate can sometimes gum it up, but these already have the coloring in them so they’re smooth as silk.
If you’re trying to limit food dyes, you can totally just use white chocolate {or regular milk chocolate or dark chocolate, for that matter} but of course they won’t be quite as Grinch-y. If you want to add a smidge of green, you could melt some green candy melts, add them to a pastry bag, snip the tip and drizzle just a little bit of green chocolate over them.
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! For this recipe, depending on their age I’d suggest having them try by:
- Microwaving the chocolate
- Stirring the chocolate
- Filling the molds
- Adding the cocoa mix and marshmallows for the filling
- Adding the heart sprinkle!
If your kids are on the younger side, you might only want them to help with the filling. Melting chocolate can get really messy, really fast, so depending on your mess tolerance and patience levels that’s kind of a “your call” situation.
Of course, making these yourself and surprising the kids with them on movie night would be super fun, too!

Grinch Inspired Hot Cocoa Bombs
These Grinch Inspired Hot Cocoa Bombs will make YOUR heart grow three sizes when you share a hot cocoa with your kids and watch the marshmallows explode!
Ingredients
- 1 12-ounce package green melting chocolate
- 1 packet instant cocoa mix
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- ¼ cup red melting chocolate
- ¼ cup white chocolate chips
- 6 heart candy sprinkles
- 6 cups hot milk to make the bombs
Instructions
- Place the green melting chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the chips are fully melted.
- Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated.
- Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs. Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator.
- When the chocolate is set, remove each of the chocolate pieces from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with marshmallows and half the sprinkles.
- Reheat the chocolate in 15 second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam. Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed.
- Melt the red and white chocolate according to the package instructions, then place the melted chocolate into piping bags. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs to decorate. Place one heart
sprinkle on top of each bomb. - Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour.
- To make the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug. Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate. When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.
