Snacks have always been my favorite food group, and one snack in particular has always been a favorite of mine- soft pretzels! It’s just not a trip to the mall {or the movies!} without a soft pretzel.
Well now I’ve even been enjoying soft pretzels at home with this SUPER simple recipe hack- using crescent roll dough to make soft pretzels at home!

I’m not really great at making dough- I just don’t have the patience. But this dough is made for you and is super easy to work with, so even if you’ve never baked with dough before you’ll be able to tackle this recipe!
Whether you are baking a special after school snack or making these for a party, they’re SUPER simple and such a fun snack! Keep reading to find out how to make them!
Do I have to boil these homemade soft pretzels?
Yes, otherwise they won’t really be the pretzels you’re hoping for. I’m sure they’ll still be a delicious snack, but boiling pretzels is what causes the perfect soft-on-the-inside, crisp-on-the-outside texture that makes it a traditional soft pretzel.
I definitely don’t recommend skipping this step, and the good news is that each pretzel only needs to boil for about 30 seconds and you can even do them two at a time!

Can you make homemade pretzels ahead of time? How can you keep soft pretzels fresh?
Wrapping soft pretzels in aluminum foil helps keep pretzels fresh, but if you’re making them more than one day in advance you’re going to want to freeze them until you’re ready for them. But if you’re just planning to prep these in the morning for a party later in the day, you’re good to go!
Tip: If you are prepping these ahead of time, I’d hold off on adding butter and salt until just before serving. So store them as-is from the oven, then heat them, butter them and salt them when you’re ready to eat them.
Can I Make Homemade Pretzel Bites Instead?
Totally! My kids are big fans of pretzel bites so I totally get it. Not much will change about this recipe other than skipping the whole twisting step.
Instead, cut them into your bite size pieces before boiling them. Then proceed with the recipe as directed, but I would suggest checking on them after about 8 minutes and continue checking on them after that, removing them from the oven when they are golden brown.
If you do make this recipe as homemade pretzel bites be sure to let me know how they come out!

Homemade Crescent Roll Pretzels
Want to know how to make soft pretzels at home? This easy recipe starts with crescent roll dough and can make pretzel twists or even pretzel bites with the same homemade method!
Ingredients
- 10 cups water
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 8 count can crescent roll dough
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Heat the water and the baking soda in a large pot over high heat until it begins to boil, then reduce heat to
medium.
Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Starting at the large end, tightly roll up the dough. Continue rolling the dough on the work surface until it becomes a long rope, around 12 inches long.
Form the pretzel shape by twisting the two ends together, then folding the twist over on top of the bottom loop. Continue this process until all the triangles have been formed into pretzel shapes.
Place the pretzels in boiling soda water two at a time. Cook for around 30 seconds, then carefully remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towel lined plate. Repeat with remaining rolls.
Place the pretzels on the prepared baking sheet and reshape the dough, if needed.
Whisk together the egg and water and lightly brush the top of each pretzel with egg mixture.
Bake for 11 to 13 minutes or until deep golden brown.
Brush each pretzel with melted butter and top with coarse salt before serving.
