After a never-ending stream of holidays from October to April, summer brings with it the only real lull in celebrations. But that’s not to say summer is entirely without pomp and circumstance- summer plays host to not one, not two, but THREE patriotic holidays here in the USA!
Memorial Day, the last weekend in May, has been the unofficial kick-off to summer for years, and of course Labor Day is the other bookend, ending summer and often marking the beginning of the new school year. But the biggest patriotic holiday of all is right in the middle- the 4th of July!

Everyone celebrates the 4th of July differently, but there are a few givens- fireworks, food, and friends or family! If you’re celebrating with loved ones this summer, or just want a special treat to enjoy while you wait for the fireworks to start, you need this delicious Red White & Blue Parfait recipe!
This recipe is simple enough for the kids to help- and since school’s out, they could probably use something to do anyway! It’s easy to adjust this recipe for bigger groups as well so if you’re hosting a 4th of July barbecue or a summer picnic, this would be a great dish to bring to really impress everyone!
How do you make layered jello parfaits?
The most important thing about making layered jello parfaits is letting every layer set before you add the next one. This does make the process take quite some time, but it’s all time where your parfaits are just chilling {literally} in the fridge while you’re chilling {figuratively} around the house waiting.
Each layer needs to set for anywhere from 20-40 minutes, depending on how much you’ve used and how cool your fridge is. Be sure to test your layers before adding the next- a slight poke with a clean finger will tell you if it’s set or not.

What is jello parfait made of?
This recipe includes your typical jello mix, along with unflavored gelatin, water and condensed milk. These parfaits look extra cute {and are extra sweet} with some whipped cream and sprinkles as well, but that part’s up to you.
If you don’t want to use gelatin, there is a plant-based gelatin alternative you can use {affiliate link} here.
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! You’ll want to be careful with this though as the jello is always very hot as it’s being poured. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to skip the layering parts with them and just put them on whipped cream and sprinkle duty, which to be honest is the most fun part anyway!

Red White & Blue Jello Parfaits
These jello parfaits are so simple to make but will wow a crowd as much as the 4th of July fireworks! Stack colorful jello layers to achieve a patriotic look and top with whipped cream and sprinkles for some extra fun.
Ingredients
- 1 6-ounce package strawberry Jello
- 1 6-ounce package berry blue Jello
- 4 packets unflavored gelatin
- 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 5 cups boiling water
- Whipped cream for serving (optional)
- 6 half-pint jars
Instructions
- Whisk together the strawberry jello, one packet of unflavored gelatin and 2 cups of boiling water. Continue stirring until all the gelatin has been dissolved in the water.
- Pour 1/3 cup of Jello mixture into each jar.
- Place the jars in the fridge to chill for about 40 minutes, until the mixture has begun to set and is no longer liquid.
- While the red jello sets, prepare the white layer by whisking together two packets of unflavored gelatin with one cup boiling water and the sweetened condensed milk. Continue stirring until all the gelatin has been dissolved. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature to cool until the red Jello is set.
- When the red jello is set, carefully pour 1/3 cup of the white gelatin mixture into each jar.
- Return the jars to the fridge to chill until set. Begin checking them after about 20 minutes, but keep them in until they have completely set.
- While the white gelatin is setting, prepare the blue layer by whisking together the berry blue jello, one packet of unflavored gelatin, and 2 cups of boiling water. Continue stirring until all the gelatin has been dissolved in the water. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature to cool until the white gelatin has set.
- When the white gelatin is set, carefully pour 1/3 cup of blue jello over the top of the white layer.
- Return the jars to the fridge to chill for an additional 3 hours
- Optional but delicious: top with whipped cream and sprinkles before serving
