Valentine’s Day is such a great chance to remind the people in your life how much you love them. My husband and I don’t really do all that much for the occasion, but we do like to make it special for our kids. {Plus, I love having a day where everything is pink- as a boy mom, I don’t have nearly enough pink in my life!}
One of the best ways to show someone you love them is with a delicious treat, and these Red Velvet Cake Balls are PERFECT! They are super easy to make for the kids while they’re at school, OR you could even make them with the kids to pass out to their classmates and teacher {if their school allows homemade treats}.
These cake bites are simple to make and best of all, you don’t have to be a baker or a great cake decorator to make them. They’re a little on the rustic side and yet they still turn out super pretty, especially with some adorable sprinkles on top!
How to Make Cake Bites with Other Flavors
Now, in keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme I’ve used Red Velvet Cake here for it’s rich, red color. Is Red Velvet isn’t your scene, or you’re making these as a gift for someone who loves a specific flavor, you can 100% use a different cake flavor!
This is SO easy to do, too, since the recipe calls for cake prepared from a box mix. Your options are literally only limited by what you’re able to find in the store- any prepared cake mix works great!
What’s the difference between cake bites and cake pops?
Literally just the stick! If your kids love getting cake pops at the local coffee shop, you can turn these into cake pops too by just adding a lollipop stick before you coat them with the candy melts. I find it easier to coat them without the lollipop stick which is why I opted for making them as cake balls and just adding a pick, but you can make it whichever way you’d prefer!
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen, especially with fun recipes like this one! For this recipe, the only thing they might need some extra help with is baking the cake mix at the start {especially the oven part}. They will probably also need a little help with the first couple of cake balls as they get the hang of it, but should be able to finish it up themselves.

Step by Step: How to Make Cake Balls
Feel free to jump to the recipe below if you’re ready to get started, but if you need some extra visual guidance use these photos and follow along as you go!
Prepare and bake the cake mix in any type of pan. Allow to cool completely.
Scoop the baked cake into a bowl and add both containers of cream cheese icing. Stir until the cake and icing are well combined and begin to stick together.
Use a 1-inch cookie scoop to scoop out the batter. Roll it into a ball between your hands and place the balls on a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet. Continue rolling until all the cake has been used.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator to chill for at least two hours.
When ready to decorate, melt the red candy melts according to the package instructions.
Place one of the cake balls on top of fork. Holding the fork over the bowl of red candy, spoon the melted chocolate over the top of the ball until it’s fully coated. Lightly tap the handle of the fork on the side of the bowl to knock off the excess chocolate, then transfer the coated cake ball back to the baking sheet. Immediately decorate with sprinkles.
When all the cake balls are coated in chocolate, return the pan to the refrigerator to chill for an additional 30 minutes, until the chocolate has hardened.
