This summer, we’ve been spending a lot of time in the kitchen baking together. We’re making as many memories as we can before school goes back in a couple of weeks- in our case, for the first time in 18 months- but it’s too hot to go outside so we’re spending that time in the kitchen instead.
I cook dinner just about every day {unless the siren song of takeout is calling to me} but I don’t bake as often as the kids would like. If it were up to them, they’d have freshly baked cookies and brownies every day of the week!
Since they’re home right now, and since I love teaching them life skills, I’ve been teaching them how to bake new desserts, like these delicious Peanut Butter Chocolate swirl brownies!
If you’re a fan of anything peanut butter & chocolate, these are a MUST try! They’re great anytime and honestly aren’t that hard to make. Read on for the step by step directions!
Using a box brownie mix vs using a homemade brownie recipe
You may notice that I call for a box of brownie mix in this recipe. The reason? It’s easier- and since this is a great recipe for kids to make, so it saves time and frustration.
But if you’d rather use a homemade brownie recipe for the base of this one, you totally can. Just use your favorite recipe or if you don’t have one, check out this older Chocolate Overload Brownies Recipe on my blog {just skip the part about covering it with candy}.
Sticking with a box? Choose your favorite kind, but I suggest keeping it simple instead of getting something with add-ons since we’ll be adding those ourselves. Think plain chocolate instead of chocolate chip or anything too rich.
Can you use peanut butter alternatives?
This recipe calls for peanut butter in two different forms- peanut butter chips and peanut butter. The straight up peanut butter can easily be swapped for your favorite peanut butter alternative.
The peanut chips however might be trickier, I’ve never really seen almond butter or sunbutter chips. If you can find them, awesome, but if not just consider swapping for more chocolate chips.
Can the Kids Help?
Yes! Like I said, this has been a great one for getting my kids in the kitchen this summer. For this recipe, I’d suggest letting them help with:
- Making the brownies according to package directions
- Greasing a baking dish
- Adding the peanut butter chips and baking chips to the batter and stirring
- Drizzling the peanut butter over the top
- Marbling with a butter knife {depending on age but this is pretty simple}
I’d also suggest that you help a little extra with:
- Layering the batter and peanut butter {unless kids are older}
- Using the oven
