Hot Cocoa Bombs have pretty much taken over everywhere- not only are they always on social media, but they’re all over my house! My kids {and I!} love them but sometimes I want something besides hot cocoa.
Enter tea bombs!

These tea bombs- otherwise known as tea globes- are so much fun to use. They’re not the easiest thing, due to the fragile shell, but when they work they work. They are not only fun and cathartic to melt but they add a delicious sweetness to your tea that makes it even better!
What are isomalt crystals?
You’ll likely notice that this recipe calls for a unique ingredient- isomalt crystals. Isomalt crystals are a sugar substitute derived from beet sugar.
They are used in this recipe because they retain most of the properties of sugar- but are way easier to work with. In fact, it’s a common ingredient in baking and candy making!
That said, you could in theory use regular sugar- but I haven’t tried it so I don’t have any direct suggestions for you.
Are these homemade tea bombs vegan?
Yes! Double check that whatever isomalt crystals you buy are vegan {I haven’t seen any that aren’t} and that your tea choice is, but as those are the only ingredients then yes, they are vegan. In my case, I used {optional} gel food coloring but that was vegan as well.
Should you use loose leaf tea or tea bags in homemade tea bombs?
This one is TOTALLY up to you. I used loose leaf tea because I thought it was prettier {it was} but if you don’t like things floating in your tea, you can also just use a tea bag. Insert the tea bag into the bottom half of the shell, lay the string over the side so that you’ll be able to use it, and then seal with the other shell.

Homemade Tea Bombs
These tea bombs are a fun and unique way to enjoy a hot cup of tea! They are made with isomalt crystals for a sugar-free way to sweeten your tea and melt your cares away.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup isomalt crystals {this may vary based on the size of your molds}
- 1-2 drops food coloring
- loose leaf tea or tea bags
Instructions
- Add isomalt crystals to a small pot and heat over low to medium heat, stirring often with a silicone spatula.
- When the mixture begins to bubble, stir continuously until melted.
- If adding food coloring, do that now.
- Turn off heat and CAREFULLY add a spoonful of melted isomalt crystals into each mold.
- Working quickly, coat the entire mold all the way around. The isomalt will try to pool at the bottom of the molds, but don't let it. Keep coating the entire inside of the mold until the isomalt begins to harden- this happens quickly.
- Allow to set- leave on the counter for a few hours or put in the fridge for about an hour.
- VERY carefully remove shells from mold. I have found that the easiest way to do this is to gently push up the bottom of the mold. Have patience, these crack pretty easily.
- Add your tea of choice to half of the shells. Warm a plate in the microwave for about a minute until it's hot to the touch {don't burn yourself!}.
- Gently place shells not filled with tea on the hot plate one at a time and leave there until tacky to the touch. Quickly adhere to a tea filled shell to complete your globe!
To use, just put in a tea cup and pour hot water over it. Stir with a spoon to mix. Enjoy!
