‘Tis the season for baking! I feel like these days whenever I’m not online trying to find everything on the kids’ wishlists {without stepping into a store because you know, 2020} I’m in the kitchen baking up something yummy.
With most of our usual holiday traditions out of the question this year, I’m taking joy in spending time in the kitchen- especially when the kids help out. These easy Christmas cookies are made using cake mix for a simple baking shortcut that makes these really easy to make!
If you’re looking for a fun new Christmas cookies recipe using cake mix or just a fun simple at-home activity to do with the kids this holiday season, grab your kids and your apron and whip up a batch of these easy green Christmas cookies!
Can you use a different cake mix, like chocolate cake mix or gluten-free cake mix?
Sure! The green food coloring won’t work in chocolate cake so they wouldn’t be green cookies, but if you’re good with that then feel free to swap out the vanilla cake mix for your preferred flavor.
As far as gluten-free cake mix goes, it should work just fine as long as you’re using a full cake mix and not just plain gluten-free flour.
Can you make these Christmas cookies without food coloring? How can I make Christmas Cookies with no artificial dyes?
Of course not! These are green to add a little extra festive kick to them- and since I used gel food coloring, it only took two small drops. That said, food coloring isn’t everyone’s cup of tea so feel free to skip it or use these {affiliate link} food coloring gels with no artificial dyes.
Keep in mind that if you’re in the U.S., the M&M’s have artificial coloring. If that’s a concern, skip those entirely or try these Unreal candy gems made with colors from nature.
Can the Kids Help?
Kids can ALWAYS help in the kitchen! For this recipe, I’d suggest having them help with:
- Mixing ingredients
- Rolling dough into balls
- Adding candy and chocolate chips on top
I’d also suggest that you help a little extra with the oven {of course} as well as adding the food coloring as a little goes a long way and kids tend to be heavy-handed with coloring.
