When I was a kid, a lot of my play time involved being a princess locked in a tower, or falling into quick sand, or chasing after a wicked witch. I grew up in the 90’s, when the “Disney Renaissance” was in full swing & every couple of years movies like Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, and Mulan came out. But the movie that kicked off this amazing period of entertainment &an entire Princess lifestyle was The Little Mermaid!
Now that I have my own child, I’ve been enjoying playing these games again. The same movies that I grew up with are the ones that we watch together, and we borrow our playtime scenarios from their plots. &While I may have a boy and no little Princess of my own, it just gives me a great excuse to play the Princess all over again & let my little Knight in Shining Armor save me!
The Little Mermaid has always been one of my all time favorite movies, Disney or otherwise. It came out a week after my first birthday, so I literally can’t remember a time when it wasn’t a part of my life. &The same goes for Shane- I’ve been singing him songs from the movie since I was still pregnant with him. So we’re both very excited about the upcoming release of the movie on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on October 1st- both because I can’t wait to see it look even better, and because that means there’s a whole slew of new toys coming out for the movie!
Lots of these toys are “girly”, including some adorable dress-up outfits & dolls. {&My inner child wanted every single one.} However, there are definitely some that are great for little boys, too, like this adorable set of figurines we bought at Walmart! {See our shopping trip here.} I played with figurines all the time as a kid {&had a ridiculous amount of Ariel ones, which Shane has inherited} and so we have a lot of fun playing with them together. Sometimes we act out scenes from the movie & other times we do things that are completely silly & random! {We also got a Bubble Wand for the bathtub, and we’re really excited to use it but we didn’t notice it didn’t come with batteries or bubble solution, so we need to pick up some bubbles!}
Recently we had a The Little Mermaid themed lunch, including Octopus Dip, Starfish Sandwiches, Sea Cucumber &Tomato Salad, and {white cheddar} Goldfish crackers! While we ate, we watched the movie for the millionth time {on DVD, since the Blu-ray isn’t out yet} and afterwards we played with our figurines! It was a lot of fun & I think I want to start having theme meals like this every so often.
We enjoyed Starfish Sandwiches- any kind of sandwich you want {we just had PB&J} cut into a star &decorated with candy eyes & food markers!
We also had this {sea} cucumber & tomato salad- just sliced cucumbers and diced tomatoes covered in the dressing of your choice. {I used red wine vinaigrette.}
Under The Sea Octopus Dip
Ingredients:
2-3 Bell Peppers {color of your choice}
Dip of choiceDirections:
1. Cut one pepper in half, and remove the seeds.
2. Slice other peppers into strips until you have eight “tentacles”.
3. For bonus points, using food markers, draw a face on the half pepper {after turning it upside-down}.
4. Pour desired amount of dip into bowl or serving dish. Place “head” in center & then put tentacles around it!
5. Serve with veggies, crackers, chips, whatever!
{Note: I did use a food marker to make eyes in the photo above, but for whatever reason the pen didn’t like drawing on the pepper. Sharpie would probably work better, just make sure no one eats the pepper!}Note: Credit belongs to Family Fun Magazine for this great idea!
I’m already brainstorming fun new ways to celebrate the release of the Blu-ray- have any ideas? Here are some from other great bloggers:
