On my recent trip to Los Angeles for the #DisneyMoviesEvent, I caught a screening of the new Tinker Bell movie, Secret of the Wings. Having been a huge Tinker Bell fan growing up {so much so that my mom actually called me “TinkerShell”} I was so excited!
About the movie:
The Walt Disney Studios unveils an all-new, original full-length CG-animated feature film, “Secret of the Wings,” starring Tinker Bell, one of Disney’s most beloved and iconic characters, along with her fairy friends (Fawn, Iridessa, Rosetta, Silvermist and Vidia) and introducing a sparkling new winter fairy, Periwinkle. Debuting on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD and Digital on October 23, 2012, the film marks the first time ever Tinker Bell will fly on Disney Blu-ray 3D.
For Tinker Bell and the other warm season fairies, the Winter Woods remains a mysterious and forbidden place. “Secret of the Wings” takes audiences on an amazing journey of discovery with Tink, into this forbidden world where she discovers a magical secret that changes her life forever.
We have already learned all about Pixie Hollow, Tinker Bell’s home, which is full of greenery and life. But in this movie, we discover the Winter Woods- where everything is cold and sparkling. When Tinker Bell gets close to the border one day, her wings begin to glow. She tries to find out why & her quest for knowledge leads her to the discovery that she has a sister, Periwinkle! They were both born of the same laugh, but were each brought to a different land. They can’t be together because the Winter Woods is too cold for Tinker Bell, but Pixie Hollow is too warm for Periwinkle. But now that they’ve found each other, they just aren’t ready to lose each other again.
I loved the movie- it was so fun & uplifting like Tinker Bell always is. I have a sister who lives across the country so I really felt for Tinker Bell when she learned she couldn’t be with her sister all the time.
The movie was great & fit the movie perfectly and the actors were chosen perfectly for the parts. I watch many of them on a weekly basis {Anjelica Huston from ‘Smash’, Mae Whitman from ‘Parenthood’, and Lucy Hale from ‘Pretty Little Liars’, to name a few} yet they played their characters so well that I didn’t even realize it was them until the credits were rolling!
After the movie, we got to interview Director Peggy Holmes, who was such a delight to be around. You could tell how excited she was about the movie and she just made us all smile.
On the process of introducing Tinker Bell’s sister:
I talked about wanting to tell a story about bringing two worlds together. So when we originally created Periwinkle, it was not Tink’s sister. It was a girl like when it was the first day of kindergarten or the first day at a job. There’s always someone you gravitate toward and you don’t know why yet. And then as you get to be better friends you realize why. They complete your life in a way that maybe another kid doesn’t complete your life that way. So originally that is how we developed the story and it just wasn’t having as much emotional impact.
So Clay Hall actually said, “Why don’t we just make it her sister?” Because that’s a universal idea, that it’s your very right to know your sister. So then we started the process of ‘what does that mean in this world?’ So we came upon this idea that there were two little wisps, we just didn’t see it in the first movie.
On sisterhood:
I have three sisters, so I understand that bond that happens between sisters. That sort of unspoken thing. That you just look at each other and you know. You don’t have to talk about, “Oh, I would go to the end of the earth for you.” You don’t even have to say it. You just do it.
On Tinker Bell & Periwinkle’s personalities:
What we’re doing with Tinker Bell is we are continually showing you different sides of Tinker Bell’s character. I think of Tinker Bell as someone who is so loyal. We saw it in Peter Pan, the first time we met her. For me a loyal person has a huge heart, so this was an opportunity to sort of step into.
On whether Periwinkle is here to stay:
We will continue to tell Tinker Bell’s stories, and if it makes sense for Periwinkle to be in that adventure with Tinker Bell she will be there.
Secret of the Wings comes out tomorrow, October 23rd!
Note: Disney provided my travel and accomodations to cover this event. All experiences are authentic & all opinions are my own.
