Have you ever felt like you had the absolute worst luck? Maybe no matter how hard you tried to do something, it just wasn’t working out. Or maybe you had a whole series of small setbacks that felt too consistent to be by chance.
Well, Sam Greenfield knows what that’s like. For some reason, she’s always been very unlucky- as a child in foster care, and still now as she turns 18 and is left to figure things out on her own. That is, until a chance encounter with a black cat!
About the Movie:
From Apple Original Films comes the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world, who when she stumbles into the never-before-seen Land of Luck, sets out on a quest to bring some good luck home for her best friend. But with humans not allowed, her only chance is teaming up with the magical creatures who live there to do it.
Luck was such a fun movie. I had never seen a movie play with the concept of luck as a real, tangible thing, and that new concept allowed for the creators to really build an entire world.
The Land of Luck was so creative, from the lucky symbols running things to showing how humans in the regular world receive both good and bad luck. In movies with entirely new concepts like this, there’s always a chance that the story will be bogged down by the world-building; in this movie, that wasn’t the case. Everything was explained, but not to the point of becoming boring, and it was easy to follow along with why things worked the way they did.
Another thing that I loved about this movie was that there weren’t really any bad guys. Of course conflicts happened and people {and creatures!} had things to overcome, but there weren’t any villains. Certain characters may have had hidden agendas, but it was out of necessity, not malice.
My whole family enjoyed this movie, kids and adults alike, and it was such a great movie to end our summer on! Be sure to catch the movie this weekend- and if you haven’t already, be sure to check out my interview with Simon Pegg, who plays Bob!
