I received a copy of this movie as well as some adorable cookies to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
I love a good love story, especially one with characters you can really root for. I have always loved Cinderella, including all of the A Cinderella Story movies that are based on the story. And now there’s a brand new movie to enjoy- A Cinderella Story: Starstruck!
About the Movie:
Finley Tremaine (Bailee Madison), a small-town farm girl, longs to spread her wings and soar as an aspiring performer. When a Hollywood film crew arrives in her sleepy town, she is determined to land a role in the production and capture the attention of handsome lead actor Jackson Stone (Michael Evans Behling). Unfortunately, a botched audition forces her to change course. Now, disguised as cowboy “Huck,” Finley finally gets her big break. But can she keep the charade a secret from everyone, including her evil stepmother and devious step-siblings?
This movie was a fun watch, with Finley having to balance her roles as an actor in a movie who’s undercover as a boy and her regular life taking care of her family farm. She has to deal with unending requests from her stepfamily- her stepmother, stepbrother and stepsister- while filming a movie and making her cues. She builds a friendship with the star as a male actor, and a flirtation with him as herself- and of course, she struggles with wanting to tell him the truth while knowing that if she does, she could lose everything. Oh, and she also has a really cute pet pig named Jon Hamm who steals the scene several times!
Having grown up with the original A Cinderella Story, I’ve always been a big fan of this franchise! This is the sixth movie in the series and the first one on a farm. Each movie of course follows a loose structure of the original Cinderella story, with an evil stepfamily, a love interest, a lie and a happily ever after. But no matter how many times I see the same concept, I really enjoying watching the different takes on it!
This movie was no exception- it was really cute and well done, and had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. The characters were likeable, aside from the ones you aren’t supposed to like- that evil stepfamily really had me seething.
Is A Cinderella Story: Starstruck good for kids?
This movie would be awesome for tweens and teens for sure- it’s appropriate for younger kids but they might be bored by it, depending on your kiddo and their interests.
As far as language, I did catch one “H—hole”, one “D—-it” and of course, lots of bullying including words like “Stupid”. Bullying of course is kind of a major theme of Cinderella stories so as long as your kids know that it’s a bad thing, I don’t think that would be an issue. As far as romance, there are a couple of kisses {one for comedic effect} but nothing inappropriate.
I think the movie presents good lessons as well, including going for your dreams, choosing honesty {even if it takes a little while to get there}, and treating others with kindness.
