Ever since our family got our first Nintendo Switch three years ago, we’ve been obsessed with Mario Kart 8! And I’m not just talking about the kids- Justin and I have had many a date night racing on Rainbow Road!
For years we’ve dreamed of a way to take our racing skills and test them in real life- and that day is finally here with the Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit game!
About the game:
Race a real-world Mario Kart™ through your home! Use the Nintendo Switch™ system to control your kart and watch as it reacts to what’s happening in the game as you boost and drift to victory. Your in-home course comes to life on-screen with a view from right behind the driver’s seat.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit lets you and up to three friends {additional games, systems, and karts required to play all 4 at a time} race together in augmented reality- it’s so much fun to watch Bowser Jr. race around the kitchen table!
With this game, you and your family can create your own courses with household objects, toys, and anything you can think of. Then just download the game {for free} from the eShop and follow the easy prompts to connect your in person track to the game!
We recently took turns trying out the game, and here’s what everyone had to say about it:
Zac’s Thoughts {6 years old}
Zac likes that the game is in your house and likes watching the racers go around our house. He likes the different costumes you can unlock for Mario and loves racing against some of his favorite Mario characters!
My thoughts on gameplay for a six year old: Zac’s already a pro at Mario Kart- he can beat me at just about every track on Mario Kart 8. This just added even more to it for him, and with his vibrant imagination it was like unlocking a whole world for him to explore!
Shane’s Thoughts {11 years old}
Shane liked that the game could be set up wherever you want, allowing for infinite possibilities for your own custom tracks. We even made a track around the Christmas tree!
He was also a big fan of the augmented reality and thought it was really cool that you could see the real background and the gameplay at the same time. It really brought our tracks to life!
My thoughts on gameplay for a 11 year old: This game was definitely perfect for Shane- he plays quite a few games where building worlds is the whole point so building courses and tracks was right up his alley.
He got really creative and while he liked racing, I think he liked building the tracks for others even more!
Justin’s Thoughts {Dad}
Justin really liked setting up fun courses and coming up with new challenges. He likes how open-ended it is in the physical side of things- you can get so creative with courses, adding not just decorations on the side but entire challenges like loops, corners, and even obstacles. Like me, he was impressed that the Kart actually goes faster when you get a boost!
My Thoughts {Mom}
This game is SO MUCH FUN and is such a great way to spend time together as a family. Even with only one Nintendo Switch, you can easily take turns racing- and there’s so much to do even without being the racer!
We took turns building courses, adding different obstacles for the current racer to go around and changing the scenery on the sidelines. We even sometimes got a little cheeky and put ourselves on the track, which was always a hilarious surprise to the racer! {Check out Zac guiding us in the photo above!}
I love that this game encourages teamwork {well, sometimes! lol} and creativity and it was so fun to see the tracks the kids came up with!
