Bella Notte is 12 and a half now, but she hasn’t changed much since her youth. She still runs to greet us at the door with a toy, she still jumps all over guests {sorry- we have a lint roller if you need it!} and she still loves- and I mean LOVES- treats.
Especially now that she’s getting up there in age, we definitely give her quite a few treats every day. We always make sure to give her healthy treats from great brands- but those can definitely add up. So sometimes we like to make homemade treats as well, using real and healthy ingredients.

This recipe was developed by one of my contributors, and as you can see her adorable Rottweiler is a HUGE fan! I can not WAIT to make it for Bella Notte, and I’m sharing the recipe here too in case you want to make it for your pups!
Why Should You Make Your Own Dog Treat Toy Stuffing?
A can of food made specifically for the Kong is $8-10, but making your own mixture can save so much money and has a lot of nutritional value!
You can make a huge batch of this for less than 1 can of the ready-made stuff, and it freezes well so you can make this last a long time. In fact, this batch can fill a large sized Kong 9-12 times!

Are these all dog safe ingredients?
100% yes! In fact, many of the ingredients have health benefits for dogs. Sweet potatoes help support a healthy digestive system, bananas {in moderation!} have lots of vitamins that they need, oatmeal is good for their coat, and applesauce has lots of vitamins too.
Some individual dogs may have sensitivities to specific foods that the species as a whole can handle, so be sure to keep an eye on your dog anytime you are introducing new foods to check for adverse reactions.
For example, Bella Notte is allergic to rice, which we found out when she already had a stomachache and we needed to give her a bland diet. That was… interesting. She’s okay though!
Do you have to use a Kong with this?
No not at all! You can give them small portions in a bowl, freeze portions in ice cube trays to make a cooling treat for the summer, or use any other toy that lets you add wet-ish treats to it.
