This Christmas, don’t leave out your furry friends! Bake them up a yummy treat they will love with just a few simple ingredients. Don’t have any pets? These treats make a tasty and thoughtful gift for your friends’ dogs as well. They are as easy to make as a batch of cookies, and don’t require anything you can’t find at your local grocery store. The oils in the peanut butter will give these treats a crispy outer layer and chewy inside that have been doggy tested and approved. Add a cute ribbon or cellophane wrapping and you’re all set to distribute these fun treats to all your canine pals!
Here’s what you will need:
½ cup smooth peanut butter
1/3 cup whole wheat flour, plus additional for dusting your baking sheet
1 cup white rice
3 tablespoons of water
Food processor
Rolling pin
A doggy themed cookie cutter
Paper towel
Christmas themed ribbon, cellophane, or decorative treat box
To bake:
Begin by preheating your oven to 375°.
Cook the rice according to package instructions and allow to cool.
Combine the rice, peanut butter, and flour in a food processor. Add one tablespoon of water at a time and puree mixture until it is smooth. {You may or may not need all 3 tablespoons of water.}
Remove the dough and place it on a baking sheet or clean surface dusted with flour. Form the dough into a large ball and roll flat to 1-inch thickness with a rolling pin. Press your cookie cutter down firmly over the dough to cut out each piece. {Note: The dough will be oily due to the peanut butter and will get more oily over time. The quicker you are able to cut the treats the less of an issue this will be.}
Place the cut-outs onto an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, flipping the treats half way through.
Remove from the oven and place on a paper towel lined plate. Allow to cool.
Makes about 2 dozen treats. {This may vary due to the size of your cookie cutter.}
To wrap:
Once the treats have cooled, stack them a few at a time and choose from a variety of creative ways to wrap them for gifting:
- Tie the stack off with a Christmas themed ribbon
- Wrap the stack in colorful cellophane and tie off with a ribbon and gift tag
- Package the treats in a holiday treat box
{Note: Be sure to remove any ribbons or packaging before giving to a dog- they will smell delicious and seem edible so you don’t want to risk them eating it!}
How do you spoil your pups during the holidays?
