Today is National Video Games Day, and to celebrate I’m sharing this DIY Mario Mystery Block Storage Cube!
My whole family loves video games, especially Nintendo games. Each of my kiddos has a Switch and a 3DS- and a LOT of accessories for each one. From extra Joy-Cons to amiibos to game cartridges, they have a lot of Nintendo “stuff”.
Instead of having all of that stuff laying around, I wanted to come up with a cute way to store some of their most-used items {like the amiibos to their favorite games and their backup Joy-Cons} in their rooms, but I wanted it to be cute. Then it hit me- why not make a Mystery Block Storage Box? That way they would know exactly what the box was holding, but it would also double as adorable decor.
To make this easy DIY Mystery Block Video Game Storage Block, just follow the instructions below!
DIY Mystery Block Storage Box
Supplies:
1 Unfinished Wood Tissue Box {from your local craft store- you can find online but they are MUCH cheaper in store}
1- 2 fl.oz bottle Acrylic Paint- I used DecoArt Americana brand in Bright Yellow
Paintbrush
Pencil
Scissors
1 Small Sheet White Adhesive Vinyl
Print out of Mystery Block {found via Google}
Small piece of cardboard that is about the same size as one of the square sides- you can use cut-out cereal boxes, etc.
Directions:
Remove the bottom from your tissue box, which will now be your lid. Paint the top of it {the part that is exposed} yellow, along with the outside of the box. You will likely need a couple of layers- make sure you allow each layer to completely dry before moving on!
Print out a mystery block image and size the photo to 5×7 on your printer. Then cut out the question mark from the print-out.
Put the cut-out question mark, backwards, on the back of your sheet of vinyl. Trace with pencil. Cut out with scissors.
Apply question mark in the center of one of your sides.
Cut upcycled cardboard to size and place in the now-bottom of the tissue box, where the hole that tissue is supposed to come from is. Glue down if necessary {I skipped this step and didn’t need it}.
Fill with your favorite Nintendo accessories, including amiibo, Joy-Cons, games, and more. Or just store other favorite small items!
If you’re looking for great new games for your kids, we’ve been loving Super Mario Maker 2 for Switch lately. It allows the kids- including Zac, who at only 5 is still perfectly capable of using it- to build their own levels. They can then challenge us or each other, and there’s even an option to share your creations with others online!
We have other games we’re looking forward to, too. Luigi’s Mansion 3 comes out on Halloween {how fitting!}, Pokemon Sword and Shield will come out November 15th, and just today Nintendo announced the new Ring Fit Adventure!
Ring Fit Adventure includes two new fun Switch accessories that require physical movements from players. Using the Ring-Con and Leg Strap, you can jog, squat, and flex to quest in Adventure mode or play shorter games in Quick Play mode. It sounds like a really fun way to get a workout in! Ring Fit Adventure will hit stores on October 18th.
What is your favorite Nintendo game?
