Zac is at a really fun age right now. Next month he turns three, and his imagination is running wild these days. He likes to play with anything that allows him to play pretend- and he likes to build things, too. That’s what makes LEGO DUPLO bricks the perfect toy for us!
Since he was just one year old, Zac has been a huge fan of LEGO DUPLO bricks. At first we practiced stacking them, and he figured out how to make them go together. Eventually he began stacking them higher and higher into towers, and now he actually builds things- with a little help.
Our favorite LEGO DUPLO set came with picture cards to give him examples of what to build, so he picks out something to make and we work together to find all the right pieces. I encourage him to try to assemble everything on his own, and if he gets stuck on a particular piece, I step in.
He loves making the pictures come to life, but he still enjoys making his own creations as well! I’ve noticed his favorite things to create all tend to be food related, though- he’s made about forty different combinations of “birthday cake”.
Because Shane and Zac have four and a half years between them, it can be hard for them to find toys that they can both enjoy. Since both of them adore LEGO bricks {so much so that we’ve been to LEGOLAND several times!} they are able to easily bond over their brick creations!
Sometimes Shane will help Zac build something, and sometimes Zac just watches Shane make his own creations. Even though LEGO DUPLO bricks are designed especially for small hands {and ages 1 & 1/2 to 5}, Shane still enjoys using them when he plays with Zac and he likes that it’s easier to build a tall tower since the bricks are so big!
I like that they are safe for both of them to use- I don’t have to worry about any small pieces being left out for Zac to find.
Whether you have kids at home who love to build or who have never used a building toy, LEGO DUPLO toys make a fantastic gift. You can buy a big box of bricks that encourages open-ended play or choose one of the many sets available, some of which include favorite characters or fun scenes like farms and race cars. Even if you buy a kit, you can use the bricks to make anything you want- the sky’s the limit!
