Did you know that it’s World Space Week? My whole family is crazy about space! Justin actually thought about switching his major to astronomy on more than one occasion in college, and Shane has really developed an interest in it as well. The boys bond over books about space- and over shows about space, like Miles from Tomorrowland.
We all love Miles from Tomorrowland because it is a great show with interesting characters, amazing visuals, and a strong family dynamic. It’s a show that we are all excited to see new episodes of- but will just as soon watch our favorite episodes over & over again. So when my family found out that I would get to meet the creator of the show- as well as hear a bit about behind-the-scenes and what’s coming up for Miles- last week on my trip to San Francisco, I’m not sure who was the most jealous!
Last week I was able to head to Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California {look for more about that in an upcoming post!}, where I was greeted by a whole team of amazing people. Among them was {left to right}: Julie Ann Crommett {CS Education in Media Program Manager at Google}, Diane Ikemiyashiro {Director or Original Programming at Disney Junior}, Angela Navarro {Software Engineer at Google}, Isis Anchalee Wenger {Engineer}, Dr. Yvonne Cagle {NASA Astronaut and Consultant on Miles from Tomorrowland} and Sascha Paladino, creator of Miles from Tomorrowland.
Sascha started off by talking about the inspiration for the show, which came when he found out he was going to have twins. He had a bit of a panic attack and thought that he would never be able to go on an adventure again, which he was upset about because he traveled a lot.
“I started daydreaming: ‘What’s the greatest adventure you could have with your family?’ And it was going to outer space, something I’d always wanted to do, and so that’s where Miles was born. And the crazy thing is, once I had kids, I realized that the adventures you have are better when your family is with you.”
-Sascha Paladino, Creator, Miles from Tomorrowland
He thought about being a family traveling through space and the rest is history! {Or I suppose, technically, the future.}
When Sascha and the team behind Miles from Tomorrowland were creating the show, they were doing it with Miles being the main character in mind. Disney Junior had said that they wanted a show with a boy main character so that was always the goal- but when the show came out, they realized that Loretta, Miles’ sister, was just as important! While I have two boys instead of a boy and a girl, I love that the show includes both siblings because it shows a bit of the ins and outs of their relationship, which I already see a little bit of in my boys even though Zac is young.
Behind-the-scenes, Miles is even more complex. Did you know that it takes 18.9 million lines of code just for Miles’ character to exist? That absolutely blew my mind to think about, and explains why it can take over a year for one eleven-minute episode to make it from concept to TV screens! During that year, many things happen, including meeting with the consultants for the show {like Dr. Yvonne Cagle, NASA Astronaut}, animation, coding, and of course, composing music and recording the actors.
I’ve always liked Miles from Tomorrowland for many reasons, but being able to see the passion for the show in the eyes of the creator and consultants made it resonate even more for me. Every person that we spoke to is so excited to be sharing their love of STEM {science, technology, engineering and mathematics} with a whole new generation of kids!
If you have a little one who loves Miles from Tomorrowland, you won’t want to miss the new episode airing this Saturday on Disney Channel! This episode kicks off 7 weeks of new Miles episodes {paired with new “Captain Jake and the Never Land Pirates” episodes} so it’s going to be a pretty blastastic fall!
This Saturday’s Halloween-themed episode is “Ghost Moon/Stormy Night in a Dark Nebula” and it will be premiering at 8:30 AM ET/PT on Disney Channel. {Be sure to double check your channel settings as the new episodes premiere on Disney Channel first!} A new episode will air each week for the next seven weeks, followed by a catch-up marathon on October 31st!
In “Ghost Moon”, the Callistos are sent to investigate eerie sightings on a dark moon.
In “Stormy Night in a Dark Nebula”, the Callistos enter a dark nebula and find some spooky inhabitants!
Have you {or your littles} seen Miles From Tomorrowland?

This was such a great experience. I still can’t believe we got to visit THE Google! And it definitely isn’t every day that you get to meet an astronaut!
Shell says
It was out of this world! {Pun totally intended.}

We are totally big fans of the show. I like how different it is than other cartoon shows. What a SUPER cool experience to visit Google Headquarters! It sounds like it was eventful. 🙂

I can already tell this is going to be a great show. They seem to really care about it! It’s awesome that they have a real astronaut consultant.
Shell says
Definitely! The show has been on for awhile now and it’s become an instant hit. I think it’s going to be around for quite some time!
Crystal says
Wow, I had no idea how much goes into the production of the show. I love that there are NASA astronauts confirming details.
Shell says
I know, I was so surprised! With it being a kid show, I didn’t think they’d care so much- but I’m glad they do, because my son learns a lot from Miles!

No, the kids and I have not seen Miles from Tomorrowland but love Disney so expect that it’ll be a tearful show but great. I agree with what Sascha said, you really do need your family to enjoy those dreams more. It’s always better with the family instead of just yourself.
Shell says
I don’t think I’ve shed any tears with this one yet since it’s geared toward the little ones but I TOTALLY know what you mean. Every Disney and Pixar movie makes me sob uncontrollably. 🙂

What an experience to hear from all of them! We love Miles in our house!
