Did you know that on average, parents spend nearly double on summer entertaining than they do for the holidays?! At first I was shocked, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Kids aren’t used to having so much free time &they get bored. Plus, if you live somewhere obscenely hot, like I do, it’s hard to enjoy the low-cost option of playing outside all the time & so sometimes, trips to the movies or other expensive ventures come into play. That’s why I am so thankful that we have Netflix to get us through this heat!
If you don’t have Netflix, you may be surprised to know that the average household has 3 Netflix-ready devices. We have EIGHT- Wii, Xbox 360, an Android phone, an iPhone, an iPad, our computer & even our two Blu-ray players. In fact, we actually chose the Blu-ray players because they were preloaded with a Netflix app! Having it so readily available makes it easy for us to watch it anywhere- whether Shane’s watching a show in our room while I am stuck in bed with morning sickness, we’re watching a movie on the couch together as a family, or I’m trying to keep him distracted long enough to get through my grocery list.
I’ve been a Netflix members for years & have watched it become more & more kid-friendly. Now they have a whole separate “Just For Kids” section when you open the app, which prevents them from watching bad stuff {which is appreciated since they have “Breaking Bad” & “Sons of Anarchy” on there- two shows I can’t wait to watch but would rather keep my three-year-old away from}. &Even more recently, they launched Netflix.com/families, a guide to summer entertainment for the whole family!
You can use this website- whether or not you’re a member- to get great entertainment ideas. There are tips from parents as well as suggestions for what to watch. They have something for every situation- “Quiet Time”, which includes shows like Shaun the Sheep & Curious George, a section called “Are We There Yet? Great Titles to Take On Vacation” that all revolve around adventures, and of course there’s a classic “Family Movie Night” section, where you can find a lot of great favorites. Right now I’m loving the “Get Ready for Preschool” section since Shane starts in August!
“Daniel Tiger!”
One of my favorite things about Netflix is that it is always commercial-free. That is a big deal to me, especially when it comes to programming for Shane. &Since the monthly fee for a streaming plan starts at just $7.99 {less than just one movie ticket!}, we get more than our money’s worth every single month.
Netflix.com/Families is a new destination designed to meet your family’s summertime entertainment needs. On Netflix.com/Families, parents can find lists of movies and TV shows for all kinds of special summer moments.
Visit www.Netflix.com/Families for more information on the best ways to stream as well as videos from families using Netflix.

We have had Netflix for well over three years and wouldn’t want to live without it! I love the “Just For Kids section, since I know there will always be something kid appropriate to watch no matter the time of day. For $7.99 a month it is a steal for all the great movies, TV series , and documentaries you can find on there without being interrupted by commercials. My daughter who has been bored silly this summer (due to boyfriend returning to Italy) sat down and watched the whole season of Glee-one episode after the other- to get her mind of things. Netflix really helped get her through a tough time. It is the one service I can actually say I don’t mind paying for every month!

We used to have Netflix years ago. We’re contemplating signing up again because we rarely watch TV and we’re wasting money on Cable.
