I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Huggies and Target. I received samples and a promotional item to facilitate my review.
I have very sensitive skin- I’m allergic to nickel so I can’t wear most costume jewelry, I can rarely use lotions or washes with fragrance, and I have eczema to top it all off. So when I had Shane and he too had sensitive skin, I thought I’d be a total pro. It turns out, however, that babies have even more sensitive skin- and it can be pretty high maintenance! Luckily, we picked up a few tips & tricks for dealing with sensitive baby skin along the way and so when Zac was born, we really did know all the secrets.
If you’re expecting your first or know someone who is, keep reading for my top 5 tips for dealing with baby’s sensitive skin- that way you {and your baby} don’t have to learn the hard way like we often did!
1. Hypoallergenic doesn’t always mean hypoallergenic. I’m not sure what the requirements are for claiming that on the label, but we have tried several supposedly hypoallergenic products that caused issues. Shane is allergic to fragrance so that will give him a rash- and many hypoallergenic products that we have used include fragrance. When in doubt, always test new products on a small area of skin before slathering them all over baby’s body!
2. Don’t bathe baby every day. Depending on their age and how dirty they get, it’s best to let babies and kids with sensitive skin bathe every other day or whatever works for you and your child. {Be sure to use a facial cloth or washcloth to wipe their face and neck every day, however!}
3. Let their lotion dry before you get them dressed. Babies have rolls, which are adorable. But they can also trap moisture, especially when you put clothes on before lotion has a chance to soak in. Babies can get rashes from this so let them air dry first!
4. Be sure to use fragrance-free or hypoallergenic shampoo, too. Especially as kids get older, they might want to reach for the bright shampoo with their favorite cartoon character- and the strawberry scent. But bathing includes sitting in a tub of water, even after the strawberry has been rinsed into it. For kids with sensitive skin, this could lead to a reaction.
5. Protect their soft, sensitive skin with a great diaper. We choose Huggies Little Snugglers for several reasons. Huggies Little Snugglers have a new GentleAbsorb Liner for a cushiony layer of protection with hundreds of tiny absorbent pillows to help draw mess away from baby’s delicate skin. They are soft inside and out to keep baby comfy, and they even help avoid unnecessary diaper changes with the wetness indicator that lets you know at a quick glance if a change is needed. {Bonus: they have a Snugfit Waistband that provides a secure fit- keeping that mess in without restricting baby’s movement.}
In addition to these tips, there are several products that we’ve come to love that I always recommend to moms whose babies have sensitive skin! If you’re expecting, add these to your registry!
Mustela Facial Cleansing Cloths // Huggies Natural Care Wipes // Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash and Shampoo // Mr. Bubble Extra Gentle Dry & Fragrance Free Bubble Bath // Huggies Little Snugglers
I recommend making your baby registry at Target- not only can you ask for big items like cribs and swings, but you can ask for the little things that you’ll need a whole lot of- like diapers! &If you register at Target and include Huggies Little Snugglers and Natural Care Wipes and upload the link on the Huggies Register Your Wish website, you will be entered to win a years supply of free diapers!
If you aren’t expecting but have a little one in diapers, I still highly recommend the Little Snugglers for babies wearing up to Size 3 {sadly that’s as high as these diapers go right now- I hope they increase it in the future!}. We got ours at Target, where they always seem to have a great deal. We got a free gift card with our last purchase, so keep an eye out for specials and stock up!
Have you ever tried Huggies?

Not bathing everyday is a great tip. I only shower every other day as my skin gets way too dry if I shower daily.

That last photo is too cute! These are great tips, I have a friend with a child with sensitive skin and am going to forward this to her…

oh, those TOES! How adorable! I am far out of the baby stage, but I remember how hard it was to find the right stuff for my kids skin years ago. Looks like Huggies is making it simplier!

Allergies run in our family so we were very careful about the products we used on our babies. Thankfully, none of my children have presented anything serious so far. But just the same, I’d still prefer to use less harsh products on their sensitive skin.
Jennifer @ Mom Spotted says
I’m a big believe of #2. Everyone thinks they should bathe daily but it’s just pulling all the moisture out of their skin!
Shop with Me Mama (Kim) says
Oh yes, I hear you on products claiming to be hypoallergenic! I have learned the hard way. My daughter and youngest have HORRIBLE skin and nothing works on it. I have to be so careful or they will break out so bad with a rash 🙁 Thanks for your suggestions!

Great tips and what a cutie! My daughter has such sensitive skin, she definitely can’t bathe every night.

#1 … that really didn’t resonate with me until my son was SO allergic to everything! You are so right! Huggies are the BEST diapers!
Mellisa says
We used Huggies when my kids were babies. They are great diapers.

I wish I knew what hypoallergenic means, too. There were several things that were listed as hypoallergenic that caused issues with my son’s skin. From reading the previous comments, it looks like there are quite a few kids who have problems with hypoallergenic products. Glad to hear you have found products that work!

Great suggestions for showers and new babies. they’re all very helpful items!
Chelle @ Oh Just Stop Already says
We haven’t had much luck with Huggies on the babies but those babywipes are my absolute favorite, not just for the kids but for myself as well. Especially when we’re camping and we have lack of water.

Baby feet get me EVERY TIME. Their skin is so sensitive, it’s important to make sure you take as good care of it as possible. I also think it helps them when they get older.

We use these when we are traveling and don’t want to bring cloth. 🙂

These are tried and true tips! Also, Huggies is my go-to brand, as well.
Tiff @ Babes and Kids says
Fabulous tips. We didn’t used to bathe the baby everyday, but she get so dirty while feeding herself meals that we have to sometimes. We always lotion her right after the bath so that it can soak in her skin!

My kids are all now grown and I may used Huggies, don’t recall now. Oh the horror that I go through when I think about all those chemicals I might have added to their sensitive skin when they were babies. Glad they are much better cleaning up these products now. But I can proudly say, none of my kids every had diaper rash.
Liz Mays says
That’s so smart to make sure they’re dry before dressing them. I never thought about lotion getting trapped in rolls, but of course it would.
Karen Glatt says
Very good tips on making sure to keep babies skin from getting dry and having rashes with products that are not hypoallergenic. I like to look at all products that I get to make sure it is gentle.

It’s definitely been a long time since I have had to think about properly taking care of a baby’s sensitive skin, but I remember a few of these tips from when my kids were little. Our Dr always recommended not to bathe them everyday when during their toddler years due to eczema issues.
