If you’re shopping for a digital gift or looking for something new to download on your Nintendo Switch 2, Deltarune is a game you may not have heard of- but it’s about time you did! It’s not as famous as some of the other games out there, but it has a massive fan base already- including my kids!
What is Deltarune?
This quirky, story-driven RPG comes from Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, and shares the same offbeat humor, bullet-dodging combat system, and emotional storytelling that made his first game a cult classic. But it’s not just a new Undertale- Deltarune is its own experience. It follows a mostly new cast of characters {with a few familiar faces}, centers around a completely different plot, and takes place in a parallel universe- so you don’t need to have played Undertale to enjoy it.
What kind of game is Deltarune?
The game combines classic RPG elements- like exploring towns, talking to characters, and choosing your actions during battle- with unique mechanics that add tons of personality. Instead of just attacking or healing, many battles allow you to do things like talk your way out of conflict or simply dodge enemy attacks with quick reflexes. This game is seriously laugh-out-loud funny in a way that few games manage to pull off!
Is Deltarune complete? How many chapters are there?
Deltarune is being released in chapters, and for years, fans have been playing through Chapters 1 and 2 while waiting for the next installments. In June of this year {2025}, Chapters 3 and 4 finally dropped across all platforms- including the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2- and I can confidently say it was one of the highlights of the year for my kids! They’re huge fans of the series and had been waiting a long time for the story to continue- so to say they were excited is an understatement. And even better? They were SO impressed by the chapters and said it was worth the wait- high praise from my two impatient kiddos!
What’s different about Deltarune for Nintendo Switch 2?
The Nintendo Switch 2 version takes full advantage of the system’s improved performance and screen quality. The graphics are still simple and retro-inspired by design, but the upgraded resolution and audio output make it feel crisp and clean and definitely a bit faster. Whether you’re playing handheld or docked, everything runs smoothly and looks fantastic!
Who should play Deltarune?
This is a great game for fans of Undertale, Earthbound, or just story-heavy games with heart and a lot of laughter. The game has a strong emotional arc, plenty of secrets to discover, and characters that stick with you.
The game is rated T for Teen due to some dark/mature humor and language, along with some fantasy violence. Everyone’s comfort level is different so be sure to look into it before deciding if it’s a good fit for your family.
