I received a copy of this game to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
It’s been 10 years since a new game came out in the Mario & Luigi series, and I have to confess that I never had the chance to play the older games in the lineup. But with how excited the Nintendo fandom was when the newest installment, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, was announced, I knew I was in for a treat! Well the game is out now and I finally had a chance to play it- and once again, the fandom was right!

About the Game
The brothers return for a brand-new adventure on the high seas! When the Uni-Tree is destroyed and the world of Concordia is broken apart, Mario and Luigi must try to reconnect a fractured world, one island at a time.
Set sail with Mario and Luigi on Shipshape Island (part ship, part island) to search for the drifting islands of Concordia. When the brothers work together, you never know what you might find!
Sail: Plot your course on the Ocean Map, looking for points of interest like islands, reefs, and tiny islets. You can choose the order you visit islands in, and your approach to the challenges you’ll face, as you chart your path through the story!
Explore: When you spot an island, launch out of Shipshape’s cannon to explore a range of locations from tropical rainforests to bustling cities. Meet the locals, solve puzzles, fight baddies, and more.
Link: Overcome each island’s unique challenges to form an island link with your ship. The more islands you reconnect, the more fun discoveries you’ll unlock, like side quests and access to new areas!

My Thoughts
This game was the perfect combination of familiar- with that classic Nintendo humor and of course our favorite characters- and new and exciting with a format I hadn’t played before in a Mario game.

The turn-based mechanic reminded me of Miitopia, another game I really like, and the game overall required a lot more logic and reasoning than say a platform game that’s based a lot on timing and patience.
The game’s story is lighthearted and fun, and was definitely one of the funniest Mario games I’ve ever played. There’s a lot of reading involved so if your kiddos are particularly young be prepared to help with that, but kids who are fluent readers shouldn’t have any problem with it.
And can we talk about the art style? This game is a visual masterpiece and just such a joy to look at. It felt really on par with the mood of the game and the two elements fit perfectly together.

Buy It: If you’re ready to pick up your Switch and play, you can find Mario & Luigi: Brothership at major retailers or online at {affiliate link} Amazon. You can also download a digital copy from the Nintendo eShop!
