I received a copy of the movie to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
Like many, The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies growing up. All kids have those movies that they watch so often it practically burns a hole in the tape- that was The Wizard of Oz {and Return to Oz} for me.
For my 16th birthday, my older sister took me to see Wicked in Chicago and it was absolutely amazing. It’s been a long time since I saw that performance though so there had been an Oz-sized hole in my heart since that day- until now!

Wicked came out to theaters recently and after breaking box office records it’s finally available to watch at home- so you can sing along to your heart’s content!
About the movie:
WICKED, one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, arrives on your screen as a generation-defining cinematic sensation. The untold story of the witches of Oz, WICKED stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman who has yet to discover her true power, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman who has yet to discover her true heart. The two meet at Shiz University and forge an unlikely friendship – before their lives take different paths following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Their extraordinary adventures will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Wicked is an immersive, cultural celebration you’ll want to experience over and over again!
One of the things that I had forgotten was just how funny Glinda is. She doesn’t appear all that much in The Wizard of Oz and doesn’t have all that much personality, aside from a few snide comments to the Wicked Witch. So to see her character come to life, especially with Ariana Grande’s brilliant portrayal of her, was great.

Elphaba’s storyline is so deeply sad at times and so inspiring in others- we all like to think we’d stand up and do the right thing when given the chance but when the people you have to stand up against have unlimited power, that may change things. I’m so interested to see how part 2 plays out next year since enough time has passed for me to have forgotten Act II from the performance!
If you simply can’t wait to see how it all ends, the movies are based on a novel by the same name so you can read that while you wait! You can buy the Wicked novel here.
One of the best things about Wicked is that it’s a great movie for those who grew up fans of the Oz-verse and those who have never seen anything about it before. As much as I loved the original movie growing up I somehow never got around to showing it to my kids, and we haven’t had the opportunity to see the production of Wicked. So even with them having absolutely no prior knowledge, they loved it. Especially Zac {10}, who asked to watch The Wizard of Oz the next day- and then started watching Wicked again!
