I received a copy of this game to facilitate this review.
All the way back in 2020 {which feels like a decade ago} our family discovered Paper Mario: The Origami King. We absolutely loved it and played it for months, especially Zac and I.
That was our first foray into the world of Paper Mario, so when we heard that Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was being remade we were excited but not as much as those who knew about it already. Having loved The Origami King, we were excited for a new-to-us Paper Mario game- but having never played The Thousand Year Door on GameCube {where it originally came out in 2004} we didn’t know how good the game was.
Spoiler alert: It’s REALLY good.
About the Game:
It’s Mario, and he’s…uh, paper?! Leaf through a storybook world made of paper as you set off to find legendary treasure! Team up with a colorful cast of charming characters, battle in epic scraps against shadowy foes, harness paper abilities to find surprises around every fold, and more!
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is SUCH a fun game. The visuals are absolutely beautiful and I love the art style so much- but the best part of it all for me is the humor. The entire game is just so funny, and it really keeps you wanting to play even when you get stuck.
Like I mentioned, I didn’t play this game on GameCube, so I can’t really compare it to the original. But it’s so worth playing, whether you’ve played it or any other Paper Mario games before. It doesn’t require any previous knowledge from other games and is a great intro in the Paper Mario aesthetic if you haven’t experienced it yet.
It does play differently than The Origami King since it’s RPG and turn-based. I don’t know if I liked this style more or the same than how it was in The Origami King- but I definitely did not like it less.
This is definitely a solid game for any Mario fan, whether you grew up playing this game or are just discovering it now like us. If you’re looking for a game for the Mario fan in your life this holiday season, I highly recommend this one!
