It’s no secret that everyone in our home is a huge fan of Nintendo- and of course that includes Mario. So when we heard that there was going to be a Mario movie from the hilarious team at Illumination, we were SO excited- but also a little nervous. Could they really do justice to such an important character that we’ve all grown up with and even bonded over as a family?
The answer: yes! We went to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie on the night it came out- we literally could not wait any longer- and were absolutely thrilled with it. My face literally hurt when I left the theater from smiling so much- I didn’t even have time to fully register one Easter egg before the next one came through.
Is it the most groundbreaking piece of cinema I’ve ever seen? I mean, no. But was it exactly what we wanted from it? Yes, and even a little bit more.
About the movie:
The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the “let’s-a go” attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes what millions of gamers worldwide have loved for over three decades and levels it up to a new and breathtaking cinematic experience.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet and you’ve ever played a Mario game- whether it was on a classic NES or Nintendo Switch- this movie is absolutely a must-see. There are so many Easter eggs, from the music that plays in the background to characters and abilities and more.
If you have seen this movie, I still highly recommend watching it again- a few times- to pick up on all the hidden things! I’ve seen it twice now and caught so much more the second time, and I still know there’s more to discover with every rewatch!
