I received a copy of this game to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
I don’t know how or why, but I had never played a Kirby game until this month. It flew under the radar for me, even though it has everything I love- a cute, squishy little character that takes on superpowers and saves the day in pretty adorable ways.
As soon as I saw the trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I knew it was perfect for me- and the kids too! We have all been playing it for the last week since it came out and below I’m sharing my Kirby and the Forgotten Land video game review from the perspective of someone brand new to the franchise, as well as kids. Read on to see if it’s for you!
About the Game:
In this colorful adventure you’ll explore a mysterious world and face off with foes to save Waddle Dees, growing your home base, the once-deserted Waddle Dee Town! Along the way, you’ll discover Kirby’s hilarious new Mouthful Mode that lets him transform into vending machines, cars and more. You can also team up with loved ones for exciting co-op play – perfect for family bonding! This all-new game is great for all ages, offering two difficulty settings: Wild Mode for a tougher challenge or Spring Breeze Mode for an easier, breezier adventure!
We recently took turns trying out the game, and here’s what everyone had to say about it:
Zac’s Thoughts {8 years old}
I really like how it’s open world, and I like the vending machine Mouthful Mode because you can squirt juice cans and it’s really funny. I like how even the world map is open world. My favorite character in the game is Kirby because his he can turn into big objects.
My thoughts on gameplay for an eight year old: While Zac is fluently reading and has been for awhile, some games still cause a lot of questions when they aren’t totally straightforward in what needs to be done. Kirby doesn’t have an abundance of reading, but does manage to make it clear what you’re supposed to be doing. Even on the bonus levels where no instructions are given, it’s still pretty easy to figure it out.
We’ve only had the game since launch, so just over a week, so we’re far from beating it. I assume as the levels go on it’ll increase in difficulty, but so far I have not had to step in to help at all, but it’s still been challenging enough for him to actually be fun.
Shane’s Thoughts {12 years old}
It’s really cute. I like the objectives, like the extra ones that get revealed as you go. On the first level I got almost all of them on my first try except for one of them- for the tulips I got 4/5. All the transformations into Mouthful Mode are cool, especially the car. I think it would be fun to play in Co-Op Mode.
My thoughts on gameplay for a 12 year old: Co-op mode is awesome for 12 year olds, whether playing with their friends or with family. Kirby could seem too childish on the surface but it really isn’t- Kirby’s whole thing is being a total kick-butt hero even though he happens to be adorable. This game has a lot to offer tweens and teens and is definitely worth getting any kid who likes games that include defeating bad guys and fulfilling quests to save the day.
My Thoughts {Mom}
This game is an absolute delight to play, especially on my Nintendo Switch OLED. The visuals are just so bright and sunny and Kirby is so adorable- I especially love the little dance he does every time you beat a level!
I really appreciate that two play modes are available- Wild Mode and Spring Breeze. With these options, you can choose how you want to play- Wild Mode is the “normal” setting, while Spring Breeze is “easy” mode with easier enemies and more health for Kirby. Having these options is great for beginners to the series as they get their footing as well as young kids who might need a little extra help.
The game has strong Super Mario Odyssey vibes, but without being too similar. It has a lot of the best bits in common though, from the open world factor to the abilities obtained throughout. I’ve been hoping for a Super Mario Odyssey 2 game for almost 5 years now, so Kirby and the Forgotten Land has definitely helped to fill that void for me.
Buy It: You can find Kirby and the Forgotten Land at major retailers or online at {affiliate link} Amazon. You can also download a digital copy from the Nintendo eShop.
