This post is brought to you by The Last Lumenian Series. All opinions are my own.
I’ve always loved reading, and as a kid I often left the library with a stack of books taller than I was. My love of reading has never wavered, but admittedly I don’t have as much time to read for fun as I’d like these days. That’s why when I do take the time to curl up with a book, I want it to be a great one. And that’s why I’ve been reading the The Last Lumenian Series by S.G. Blaise!
This series includes two books, The Last Lumenian and True Teryn, and they’re unlike any books I’ve read before. I have always loved fantasy novels, but these are Sci-Fi Fantasy- an entire genre that I somehow hadn’t heard of before. Fantasy books typically take place in the {fictionalized} past- the total opposite of Sci-Fi books. But these books take place in the future, on other planets- but with the staples of fantasy novels like magic, mages, royalty and castles. And it all totally works.
If you’re looking for your next great read, read on to find out why these books need to be added to your bookshelves immediately!
1. The pacing is spot on- you will not get bored. Both books are fast-paced and entertaining. I don’t know about you, but most of the time when I read it’s to get a momentary escape. Whether I’m avoiding the news or my own stressed out mind, reading allows me let go and enjoy something different. So when I’m reading a book and it gets to a lull and I find myself spacing out a bit and going back to those stressful thoughts, it kind of defeats the point.
That didn’t happen to me in these books. They’re so fast-paced, often skipping time but in a way that makes sense and helps to move the story along. Each chapter- some of which are very short- ends on a note that has you wanting to start the next one immediately. The books are packed with both action and feeling, and both will have you lost in the main character’s world.
2. The story features a great role model. Speaking of the main character, Lilla is so empowering. She is a princess in a culture that clearly wants her relegated to the sidelines, yet she works as her mother did to stand up for what’s right and make changes. Not only are her actions empowering, but her mental health struggles are, too. From the very beginning of the first book, we’re aware that Lilla suffers from panic attacks- and as someone with anxiety who does as well, it was really empowering reading about someone who gets them but was out there making change anyway.
3. There’s just the right amount of romance. The romance is fun, and not something I’m used to reading in Sci-Fi. Since the book doesn’t adhere strictly to Sci-Fi tropes, there’s lots of room for romance- and from a female gaze. It adds some emotion and humanity to the story instead of just having it be about tech {or even magic}, and I thought it was a really nice way to balance out the story. When Lilla first met Callum, I found myself literally laughing out loud at her reaction- seriously, it’s very fun.
4. Both of the books allow you to escape to a new world- well, several new worlds. Like I said before, reading- at least for me- is a great escape. This books will allow you that, while still relating in their own way to some current events. You’ll be able to find some common links to the culture in the story but it’s not so similar to our own that it’ll just be an extension of daily life. These books allow you to get swept up in the story, while absolutely being relatable.
