I was provided a screener for the purpose of this review but all opinions are my own.
Back when Shane was a baby, couponing was ALL the rage. Inspired by bloggers and the show Extreme Couponing, I dipped my toe into the couponing scene- but then quickly realized I had no storage space, time to clip coupons, or need for 14 bottles of laundry detergent. So that was it for me, but I was still fascinated by people winning at the coupon game!
Well, Queenpins tells the tale of two women who go beyond clipping coupons- to counterfeiting them and selling them for a huge profit. After scamming companies out of millions of dollars, they find themselves in a totally different life than what they had before- but a determined Loss Prevention Officer gets a U.S. Postal Inspector involved, and it all comes crashing down.
About the Movie:
Inspired by a true story, QUEENPINS is an outrageous comedy about a bored and frustrated suburban homemaker, Connie (Kristen Bell) and her best pal JoJo (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), a vlogger with dreams, who turn a hobby into a multi-million dollar counterfeit coupon caper. After firing off a letter to the conglomerate behind a box of cereal gone stale, and receiving an apology along with dozens of freebies, the duo hatch an illegal coupon club scheme that scams millions from mega-corporations and delivers deals to legions of fellow coupon clippers. On the trail to total coupon dominance, a hapless Loss Prevention Officer (Paul Walter Hauser) from the local supermarket chain joins forces with a determined U.S. Postal Inspector (Vince Vaughn) in hot pursuit of these newly-minted “Queenpins” of pink collar crime.
What I thought:
This was a really fun movie. Like I said, back in the height of the couponing craze, I was definitely aware of books and blogs and even TV shows talking about “hauls” and stocking up on household necessities for less. This movie starts out with nods to that as they begin by couponing in earnest, but of course goes from 0 to 60 after that.
While I would never encourage anyone to follow in Connie and JoJo’s footsteps, it is still inspiring in it’s own way to see them take charge of their bad situations and change their lives. Granted, this isn’t exactly the way to do it- but it’s hard not to root for them anyway.
This movie would be a fun girls’ night out movie or even date night movie. It does have adult language, some {very} crude humor and of course lots of criminal activity, so definitely leave the kiddos at home for this one. But it’s a great movie for the grown-ups, whether you watch it in theaters or at home on the couch.
