I received a copy of this game to facilitate this review.
A couple of years ago for Christmas, Zac asked for Super Mario 3D World. That’s fine and all- except it was 2019, and the game was a Wii U game that came out in 2014 and we didn’t have a Wii U.
Luckily, Santa made it happen and it quickly became one of Zac’s favorite Mario games of all time. So when we heard it was coming to Nintendo Switch- and with new content in the form of a game called Bowser’s Fury- we were SO excited!

Zac is the only one of us who had played Super Mario 3D World, so the game was new to the rest of us. Even for Zac, it had a lot of new things- the entire Bowser’s Fury game is brand new and had a lot of playable content! Below is what we thought about the new game Super Mario 3D World for Nintendo Switch!

About the game:
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury offers two action-packed journeys, including the new Bowser’s Fury adventure, which features a land full of kittens and a catastrophic new foe – Fury Bowser. In Bowser’s Fury, you’ll freely frolic through Lake Lapcat, an explorable world with a variety of islands … as well as take control of the fur-ocious Giga Cat Mario, a colossal new transformation for the hero. Mario will need all the help he can get – this time Bowser’s bigger, badder and madder than ever before! Luckily, Bowser Jr., equipped with a handy paintbrush, is ready to add a splash of color and camaraderie to Mario’s efforts.

We recently took turns trying out the game, and here’s what everyone had to say about it:
Zac’s Thoughts {7 years old}
Zac’s Thoughts: It was the best game ever- out of not just Mario games, but all games. I like how Fury Bowser just spawns at a random time. I also like how Bowser Jr. helps you and defeats the enemies. I really liked the secret ending. It was fun playing Super Mario 3D World on Nintendo Switch since I already have it on Wii U.
My thoughts on gameplay for a seven year old: Zac was the only one who had played Super Mario 3D World on Wii U, so he definitely had an advantage going in. That said, he really enjoyed playing through both games! He’s still working on Super Mario 3D World because he spent the entire first week we had the game playing Bowser’s Fury- he has already completed the game and collected all 100 Cat Shines! That’s not to say the game lacks content- it doesn’t. He just really loved playing Bowser’s Fury and dedicated basically all of his free time to it until he had completed it.
This game was great for him- he had to think differently about some of the parts of the game in order to complete it, but none of it was too hard for him. There were bits that took him longer than others but he was able to get through it all without needing an adult to help him.
This game would be great as an introduction to Mario games for younger kids. There wasn’t a lot of reading, so even the youngest games can likely play independently.
Shane’s Thoughts {11 years old}
Shane’s thoughts: The graphics are really good, and it’s really fun. The secret stamps and stars are fun to collect and I want to get all of them. Bowser’s Fury looks amazing and I love all the different features, like the Cat Shines {which are new} and I like how you can keep a whole bunch of power-ups at once.
My thoughts on gameplay for an 11 year old: While this game was easy enough for my seven year old, it wasn’t TOO easy for my 11 year old {or me, for that matter!} It had a lot of fun levels that kept his interest for a long time. While Zac likes to play the same game over and over until he finishes it, Shane likes to spread his time between multiple games- which means that he’ll likely be able to play this game for weeks or even months before finishing it.

My Thoughts {Mom}
I have been absolutely LOVING this game! It’s a nice combination of open-world Super Mario Odyssey and the classic Mario games with Worlds and Levels, which makes sense based on when it was first released.
I love having the structure of individual levels to complete- and it’s exciting starting each new level since there are so many different features in each. I love that you can run around though since I’ve gotten used to that after several hundred hours of Odyssey.
Bowser’s Fury is also really fun, and is like a combination of open world game and puzzle. Each area has secret things you have to uncover while Bowser’s in Fury mode, which only happens every so often- so it adds another element to the game.
The Bowser’s Fury part is a lot more open world than the 3D World part- in Bowser’s Fury your goal is to collect Cat Shines, much like collecting Moons in Odyssey.
I thought it would just be a small mini-game since it’s brand new and just added to Super Mario 3D World, but it is actually a lot of content- you can collect 100 Cat Shines in all!
