It seemed like it happened over night- Pokémon was everywhere I went. I was in first grade and suddenly all the boys in my class were obsessed with Pokémon cards. Suddenly the four square court was empty as everyone spent their entire lunch playing Pokémon, even though I’m pretty sure they were all making up the rules as they went along back then.
What everyone thought would be just a fad has grown into a HUGE thing now- and today Pokémon celebrates 25 years! While I may not have been into the Pokémon TCG {Trading Card Game} as a kid, I have definitely found my way into the Pokémon fandom since then.

As soon as Pokémon Go came out back in 2016, I downloaded the app on Day One and introduced Shane to Pokémon. There’s been no going back since! He’s been a major Pokémon fan for almost five years now, and Zac is a huge fan too. They have all the video games, tons of Pokémon cards, a BUNCH of stuffed animals, lots of Funko Pops, and even pjs and clothing. And I love it.

Pokémon has been a great way for us to connect, which has proved especially valuable as Shane’s getting older. Just last weekend we spent the entire day together participating in the Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto event. We went to the park and caught Pokémon, battled at Pokestops, and caught legendaries together. And when it got too cold to walk around, we huddled in the car and played from there while chatting about everything from school to friends and everything in between.
All of this is to say that it’s really nice when you can share an interest with your kids, whether it be something you liked that they got into, one of their interests that you make an effort to try, or something that you get into together. We have a couple of things like this that we share but Pokémon has by far been the biggest one for the last few years, and for that I’m grateful.
If your kids like Pokémon too- OR if you did as a kid and you’re ready to get back into it with them- these free printable Pokémon bookmarks are perfect! Featuring some of the most recognizable Pokémon, even for beginners, these bookmarks are perfect for introducing your kids to Pokémon.
