We went to LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad {just outside of San Diego} for the first time when Shane was just two years old. He absolutely loved it and we thought it was adorable! They have LEGO sculptures everywhere that are beyond impressive, lots of fun rides, and even some really good food.
We’ve been back a few times since, including once with Zac, but it’s been too long for our liking since we’ve been there. We’ve been looking at our calendar to try to plan our next trip and there’s a lot to consider!
LEGOLAND always has so many fun activities for the whole family, so no matter when you go it’s a great time to go. But each family has different needs and things like crowds, weather, and special events can impact your plans, so if you’re trying to pick a date to go to LEGOLAND California consider the information below!

How bad are the crowds at LEGOLAND California?
Generally speaking, LEGOLAND gets big crowds on the same days that you would expect them at a theme park- think 3-day weekends from school, Spring Break, and weekends in the summer.
That said, normal 2-day weekends throughout the year {aside from the summer} still don’t get that crowded, and if you’re able to go on a weekday during the school year it’s very rare that it’ll be crowded.
Crowd levels at LEGOLAND don’t tend to get anywhere near what you’d expect at Disneyland, and since there is a lot to do besides rides you can still have fun even on a really crowded day.
What’s the weather in the summer at LEGOLAND California? What about winter?
One of the best things about LEGOLAND {aside from the park itself} is its location. Located in Carlsbad, California- right next to San Diego- the weather at LEGOLAND is amazing pretty much year-round. We’ve been in just about every season and the weather hasn’t changed more than a few degrees.
Of course, there are always chances of rain- but San Diego only gets any rain at all for about 38 days a year so your chances are good! That said, I always advise bringing ponchos on trips to theme parks so you can still enjoy your day without spending high prices per person on a poncho in the park! {Get a 5-pack of emergency ponchos on Amazon for just $9.99 here.}
When is LEGOLAND open?
If you’re used to Disneyland, it may surprise you to find out that LEGOLAND is not open every day- and many days that they are open, they close by 5pm or 6pm. This changes throughout the year of course- during high traffic times like Spring Break and summer, the park is open just about every day. And during Brick-Or-Treat nights in September and October, the park is open later than usual. You can check the calendar for hours of operation here- the calendar is already updated through the end of 2020.

So, WHEN Should You Go to LEGOLAND California in 2020?
This is entirely up to you and your family. The weather in San Diego/Carlsbad is pretty much the same year-round.
If you want to go for a long weekend during the school year, you likely won’t hit big crowds unless it’s a national 3-day weekend like President’s Day or Memorial Day, etc.
If you want to go in the summer, you’ll hit more crowds but longer hours of operation- and you’ll be close to the beach.
If you want to go to celebrate Halloween or the holidays at the park, then you’ll need to go at the end of the year of course.
If there’s an event on the calendar that catches your eye, you may want to make special plans for that.
Whatever matters the MOST to your family is what should guide your decision- there really is no wrong time to go to LEGOLAND.
