This weekend, my family went to see Abominable at our local 4DX theater. I hadn’t heard of 4DX until I got invited to check it out, but I’ve seen lots of 4D “movies”. Usually, those are motion rides that have a short film attached, somewhere around ten minutes, and are often found at theme parks. I thought maybe that was what this was but it was SO much more!
What is a 4DX Theater?
Instead of just playing a short film that was either a clip from a major film or made just for the experience, the 4DX theater actually shows the entire movie. There is motion, like I expected, but it’s throughout the entire movie and matches really well with the film. If someone is walking, you’ll feel their footsteps. If there’s a helicopter, it’ll feel like it’s humming next to you. And the entire seat will move, too. At one point my husband said the theater should have seatbelts! It wasn’t too much for any of us, but it definitely was a lot of movement.
In addition to the movement, there are other special effects like lighting effects {think camera flashes, lightning, etc.}, scents, and even fog. Oh, and the water! You can actually turn the water feature on and off but I left mine on and enjoyed getting sprinkled on in a scene where it was raining and a couple of other instances of it.
Our thoughts the 4DX Theater
We really enjoyed the 4DX theater- especially Zac and I- and thought it was a fun and extra immersive way to enjoy a movie! Abominable was a great first movie to try it with because it’s a cute movie and really had a chance to use a lot of the 4DX features. There are a lot of action scenes and a lot of beautiful visuals, and both of those things were enhanced by the 4DX experience.
Abominable Review
As for the movie itself? We absolutely loved it. The trailer hadn’t really told us all that much about what to expect so we went in not knowing but really loved the story. We thought the characters were all great, the story was touching, and the visuals were such a treat.
It was so nice seeing a movie that takes place in China, and with characters that are Chinese as well. The movie takes the characters on a trip through China and introduces some beautiful places that I’d never seen before in a movie. I feel like this movie is worth seeing just for that alone- but it’s not the only reason it’s worth watching!
My kids loved Everest {the Yeti} and we all really liked the entire movie. I think it’s safe for kids of all ages, and while there are a couple of moments of peril thanks to some bad guys, they weren’t anything that I would be concerned with even for really young kids. Even the villains were kind of funny, so while it definitely had emotional scenes, it was not too intense.
If you’re considering going to see Abominable, I highly recommend seeing if there’s a 4DX theater near you! Even if there’s not, I definitely suggest going to see this movie in theaters.
