Back in second grade, Shane discovered the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. He immediately fell in love with the books and Greg’s world, and read the entire series back to back as quickly as he could {and then read it again}. Every year we wait {less than} patiently for the next book in the series, and this year, we were surprised by a bonus book!
Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal is a spin-off of the main series and takes place in the same universe. Instead of being told from Greg’s perspective, it’s Rowley Jefferson taking a turn sharing his story! Rowley is an awesome, friendly kid and that is evident throughout the book. That’s definitely the kind of character I want my kiddo to hear more from!
About the Book:
Get ready for a whole new look into Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid!
Introducing the newest Wimpy Kid author—Rowley Jefferson! Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals . . . and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. (After all, one day Greg will be rich and famous, and everyone will want to know his life’s story.) But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess.
Shane read this book in just a couple of days because he just couldn’t put it down. He thought it was really funny and loved seeing the world of Wimpy Kid from a different perspective! All of Rowley’s adventures with Greg were a lot of fun, and Shane had a few favorites – like when they had a sleepover and got spooked after Greg told a scary story, and the time that they were passing really funny notes while Rowley was trying to study.
There was also the time that Greg and Rowley were creating superhero personas and Rowley came up with “Amazing Guy”, who was created when he was zapped by two rainbows! There were a few different times while Shane was reading this book that I heard him literally laugh out loud, which of course made me smile as well.
One of my favorite things about this book is that the main theme is being friendly and kind. As a parent, I try to teach my kids that above and beyond all else it is important to be kind, and it was really nice seeing that in a book as well. It can be hard to find positive role models in literature for this age, but I definitely think Shane should look to Rowley as a role model!
I got really lucky with Shane – not only is he smart and funny, but most importantly, he’s really kind. He always goes out of his way to help people, whether it’s his brother or a random kid he just met. He’s always been that way, and it’s one of the things I love the most about him. He has a huge heart and he shares it with everyone and anyone. I think Shane is an “Awesome Friendly Kid” just like Rowley!
