I have to admit that I am one of those people that is a little afraid to try new things sometimes when it comes to movies. When I find a character or a “world” that I like, I am happy to spend an unlimited amount of movies on the same thing- whether that’s a whole tangled web of Marvel movies or the many live action remakes {Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo…} and sequels {Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, Frozen 2, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4…} that Disney has coming up. I am here for each and every one of those because I already know and love those characters and I’m thrilled to see them again.
Don’t get me wrong, I love original concepts, too- but it does take a little more to get me excited about them. Usually. But that isn’t the case with Disney Pixar’s upcoming film Coco! The first non-sequel in Pixar’s line-up in a few years {and the only one for the next few years}, Coco won me over the first time I saw the trailer. When I first heard the concept- a living boy winding up in the land of the dead- I thought it would be too scary for my kids. After seeing the trailer, and the little glimpses that have released since then {and the extended preview we saw at D23 Expo}, I can tell that isn’t the case and that this is going to be a great family movie!
About the movie:
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
This movie has all of my favorite things- a really cute dog, a killer soundtrack, and if the previews are any indication, some great humor, too. It even has the added bonus of acting as a great way to introduce kids to a culture that they may not be familiar with- even if it’s in an elaborate, fictional way. I am really looking forward to discussing the Day of the Dead with my kids this year and learning about the traditions and customs that come with the occasion. I think it’s incredibly important for kids to learn about other cultures in a way that they can understand and I think this movie is going to open up that opportunity for many kids to learn about a beautiful culture!
