Well spring has finally arrived and the weather around here is starting to warm up! We’re ready and anxious to get back outside after the fierce winds and bitter cold of winter, but since school is still in session and Shane has some big tests coming up, we had to get creative. Instead of choosing between spending time outside and studying, we went to Walmart to get everything I needed for a game that combined the two!
We got some foam cups and two boxes of one of our favorite snacks, Goldfish® crackers. We grabbed the large 30 oz. boxes, which are only $6.68 at Walmart! We got the Colors and the Xtra Cheddar, so we can switch it up and have a tasty math session whenever we want. They also make a great after-school snack {which is something Shane needs every day} so it’s great to have these on hand.
Setting up the game was incredibly easy! Here’s the DIY in case you want to play, too:
1. Get some foam cups and write numbers 1-10 on them.
2. On each plate, add the amount of Goldfish crackers that is displayed on the cup.
3. Grab a variety of objects from around your house and let your child toss them onto the cups! Give your child two objects to toss per round, and then have them quickly add the numbers on the cups they landed on together.
4. You can also make it more challenging- try naming a number and encouraging your child to toss the objects to the cups with numbers that can be added to equal that number! {For example, if you said 10, your child would try to throw two objects at the cup with the 5 on it.} This will get them thinking about how to add up numbers while practicing their gross motor skills at the same time- a double win!
5. When the game is over, let them help you clean up by counting all the Goldfish crackers- and maybe subtract a few by snacking on them!
This game wasn’t anything fancy and didn’t require any special equipment, but it got us outside in the sun while keeping Shane’s mind sharp. I see us playing this game a lot in our future, so it’s a good thing that we stocked up on Goldfish crackers! Be sure to head to your local Walmart to stock up on Goldfish crackers, too.
