We are halfway through the summer, and we’ve crossed into “I’m bored” territory. I’m always trying to find ways to have fun with the kids, but it’s so hot outside that it eliminates a lot of options. I’ve had to get a little creative sometimes- and this weekend was one of the best examples- we had a water games day in our backyard!
Squirt Gun Races
How to Play: Poke a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup and push some string through it. Make sure the hole is big enough that the string can easily be pulled through. Tie one end of the string to a tree and the other end to another and grab the squirt guns! We don’t have a lot of trees so we actually took turns and timed each other, declaring the person with the best time the winner. If you have more trees, you can set up two tracks and have a real race!
Towel Toss
How to Play: Place a water balloon on a towel and have all the participants lift the towel up and down to bounce it. The person who lets it fall off wins- and gets splashed!
Fill the Bucket
How to Play: Fill a bucket halfway with water and grab another {empty} bucket. Line up between the two, facing the full bucket, and get a cup. The person at the front of the line hands it to the person behind them- preferably over their heads, backwards! {We had to improvise a little since Zachary is only 2 and is a bit short to be doing that.} This continues until the person in the back of the line gets the cup and dumps all the water that’s left into the empty bucket in the back. Repeat this until the bucket in the back is full and the last person to fill it gets to dump the bucket on whoever they want!
Water Balloon Drop
How to Play: Everyone gets a wooden spoon and a water balloon and competes to see who can get across the yard the fastest! If you drop it, you can pick it up, but if it pops you’re out! We made it extra fun by using different kinds of wooden spoons- including flat ones!
Of course, we had to have a good, old-fashioned water balloon fight at the end as well!
These games were all simple to play and even easy to set up. We already had everything we needed at home! When you are trying to keep kids entertained all summer it can get expensive if you’re constantly buying new things, so it’s important to think creatively about what you already own that you could turn into a fun afternoon!
After we played our water games, we enjoyed some ice cream sundaes. We made it extra special by topping our Blue Bunny® Homemade Vanilla ice cream with our favorite Smucker’s toppings! I’ve always been a huge fan of Smucker’s Magic Shell Chocolate Flavored Topping fan and Justin loves the Smucker’s Chocolate Fudge Spoonable Ice Cream Topping. We also got the Smucker’s Caramel Flavored Spoonable Ice Cream Topping and the kids loved that!
Blue Bunny ice cream and Smucker’s toppings are just better together! Smucker’s has a whole line of delicious ice cream toppings so that your family can customize their perfect sundae using their favorite toppings and their favorite Blue Bunny ice cream. It’s a lot less expensive than going out to the ice cream parlor and makes a delicious summertime dessert into a whole event!
Not only did I make our water game day inexpensive by using supplies we already had, but I got great prices on our ice cream and toppings just by shopping at Walmart. If your kids are bored this summer too, you can find more ways to have a fun summer- and keep cool- here!
