So a couple of weeks ago, I shared with you my experience buying paint testers to try out on my powder room/laundry room combo. I complained expressed my opinions about my hatred for that room & why it needed a makeover, and asked you to help me choose which color to go with. As a reminder, here are the three colors I tested:
So what color did I go with?
Drumroll Please…
None of them! *Gasp!*
After much thinking {&over-thinking, to be entirely honest} about the pros & cons of each color, we decided that they were all really close to what we wanted, but not quite there yet. So we used the paint swatches I had picked up when I bought the testers & compared those to the first attempts, using the ones on the wall as a reference. Many stores have ALL of the shades available in tester-form, so if my store had that, I definitely would have gone & gotten the tester. Alas, none of the Walmarts in Vegas had the color I needed, so we just went & bought the color we chose, and wished for the best.
So, what color did we choose? Drumroll {again} please……..
Mountain Slate Blue!
We were a little nervous since previously we were dead-set on Steel Blue, and when we used the tester, it turned out a little more purple than we had anticipated. So we held our breath while we painted the Mountain Slate Blue, and although it looked awesome right away, we waited until it fully dried to let out a giant sigh of relief. It was perfect!
The paint was really thick which meant I didn’t have to stop numerous times to wipe up spots that had splattered, and since it was a Primer & Paint in One, we only had to do one layer! We painted the whole room, including behind the washer & dryer and ceiling, using less than one can of paint. &Of course, the color was beautiful, too!
&We figured, why stop there? The new paint color gave the room a whole new life & it inspired us to do a complete transformation!
Look on to see how it turned out!
We replaced the scratched mirror above the sink with a new, framed one & replaced the hand towel hook with a nicer one.
We also replaced the light fixture.
We added a floating shelf & I moved the little decor we already had onto it, and added a frame I’ve been waiting to put in there forever.
We took down the towel bar, since there’s no shower in there & there’s already a hand towel for washing your hands. &We put in a new toilet paper roll since ours has been broken off for ages.
We also tore down the {literally} $3 blinds that the last owners had installed & Hubby put up some curtains! I love it because I never opened the blinds {they were broken-ish} and so now with the open curtains, there’s so much more light in the room! &Of course, the curtains can be easily closed for privacy.
Hubby also installed curtains in front of the washer & dryer! While we’ll probably keep them open most of the time, it’s nice to have the option to close that part of the room off, especially if there’s a mess in there &I have company. 😉
Speaking of mess, remember the big mess all over the washer & dryer? We eliminated that by doing two things: we put six canvas bins on the shelf for all of the cleaning supplies, etc. that were there {above} and we installed four hooks, each with its own laundry bag to hold the clothes and other laundry waiting to be washed- one each for darks, lights, handwashing and towels & linens. {below}
I love the end result, and am now actually excited to have people over to see our new room! The only downside? It makes the rest of the house look plain & boring… I think I’m going to have to go back to Walmart for some more testers… this time, for the whole house!
Have you ever used paint testers before completing a project? Did it reaffirm your color choice, or make you change your mind like we did? I’d love to hear your experiences so leave them in the comments!
&A SUPER special thank you to Hubby for being such an awesome, well, Hubby & spending the last two weekends painting {the only thing I helped with}, drilling, measuring, cutting, &hammering since I’m not patient enough for any of that stuff.

LOVE the color! The bf and I just moved to a new apt and we are allowed to paint here and you have inspired me to start looking into paint colors so that we can make this place our own instead of staring at white walls for as ever many years as we are here until we can find a house!
And I love the canvas boxes on the shelf… those have been my new solution to MANY storage issues!
