As my kids get older, they become increasingly hard to holiday shop for. Of course, the latest video games are always on the list, and they never turn down their favorite holiday candy. But since I don’t want ALL of their presents to be new socks and pajamas, I am always looking for things that they might want- and there are HUGE bonus points involved if that gift means they have to spend time with me.
I think it’s no surprise then that board games and card games are always a common gift under our Christmas tree- and for good reason! As a family, we genuinely enjoy playing games and make a point to do so every weekend. Of course we love playing our old tried & true favorites, but we equally love discovering new and new-to-us games that we can try out.

We recently received the Life in Reterra strategy game and Betrayal: Deck of Lost Souls card game and I know they’re both going to be a hit with my family! While we haven’t had a chance to play them yet {but we have plans to over Winter Break!} I wanted to share them now in case you’re like me and are trying to find gifts for those tweens and teens in your life.
What are the games?

Betrayal Deck of Lost Souls Card Game
Many lost souls have been lured by the secrets hidden within the House on the Hill. Now an ancient relic—a cursed deck of cards—from the darkest reaches of the attic has entrapped you as well! In the Betrayal Deck of Lost Souls standalone game, a player and their fellow explorers must race to defeat the many horrors lurking within the deck. Play Item cards to defeat Omens and Curses, but beware! There may be a traitor in the group, working against the others to unleash the one true Curse.

Life in Reterra
The Life in Reterra game is a community (re)building game! Not long from now, the world as we know it is an overgrown memory. Though the world has changed, we’ve changed with it, using anything we can find to build a new way of living. It’s up to each player to build a community of their own! First choose one of 3 ready-to-play themed building sets. Then take turns laying tiles representing diverse terrain, and filling them with buildings and inhabitants to construct a community. The more a player’s community thrives, the more points they earn. Building cards unlock powers to help players score more points. Interact with other players, and perhaps even interfere with their progress. The highest score wins!
Why do we love it?
I’ll update this post when we’ve had a chance to actually play the games, but I can already tell that we’re going to like these. As my kids get older, they want more strategy in the games they play- luck based games can be really annoying if you’re not getting lucky.

Not only will my kids be thrilled to play more challenging games that actually let them use their minds, but I’ll be thrilled to play games that will keep my kids at the table for longer. We all look forward to game night but as soon as the game is over, the kids go back to their video games and YouTube videos. These longer, more involved games will extend game time and keep the family time going longer- which is the true gift for me.
Who would love it?
Whether you’re buying these for your own kids or gifting it to a family, anyone who loves a good family game night would love these! These games ARE made for tweens and teens so if you’re playing with younger kids they might not be for you just yet.
