It’s officially October! We’re getting into Halloween mode around here- the boys have picked out their costumes and we’ve already been eating way too much candy corn. This week we’re getting the house decorated!
Since we don’t like to do anything too spooky {especially with a toddler in the house} we like to get creative with our decor. One fun way to get into the spooky spirit is to play with light- including the lamps you already have in your home! The nights have been getting longer and darker already so our lamps have been getting more use than they have in months. With just a few minutes and a few supplies, you can change the lamps in your home from plain to Halloween-ready in no time.
Spider Lamp
Supplies:
Glue dots
Plastic spiders
Lamp + lampshade
Lightbulb
Directions:
1. Attach glue dots to the underside of the spiders you wish to add to the lamp. Set to the side until you’re ready to stick them on!
2. Gently lay the lampshade on it’s side and attach the spiders, pressing firmly enough to attach the spiders but gently enough that you don’t crack the lampshade.
3. Reassemble the lamp and enjoy!
We also made this Jack-o-Lantern lamp for Shane’s room {although it’s so cute I may leave it in the living room!} that was so easy I don’t even need to include a formal DIY- just grab some Jack-o-Lantern stickers from the store and stick ’em on. It’s a very simple craft but makes a big impact when it comes to Halloween decorations!
The best part about these easy DIY lamp ideas {aside from how incredibly simple they really are} is that they can easily be undone after the holiday, so you don’t have to have a whole separate Halloween lamp. You just need to remove the stickers or peel the spiders off- the glue dots are completely removable.
One of the issues we have with lamps like these are that they tend to be fur magnets. It’s bad anywhere in the house, but especially in the living room- the main room where Bella hangs out. Using dusting cloths doesn’t really work on these- especially with the decorations attached- but I found something that does!
On a whim, I tried using our Scotch-Brite™ Lint Roller- thinking that since it can take fur and fuzzies off of my clothes in just seconds, it should be able to take it off of my lampshade. I was right and it does an even better job than I expected- and even faster! Just one quick swipe of the lint roller over the surface of the lampshade allows me to get all the fur off in less than a minute. {I was even able to use them over the spiders- but maybe don’t use them directly on top of the jack-o-lantern stickers since the lint rollers are super sticky and might pull them off.}
Once I discovered that I could use the lint rollers on my lampshades, I was inspired and decided to try using the lint roller on the walls over by the kennel- where her fur builds up easily and I typically have to pull the whole vacuum out to clean up. It did a great job there too- I have textured walls so I had to make a few passes over it, but in just a couple of minutes it was completely clean. {I actually used the Scotch-Brite™ 50% Stickier Lint Roller too and only had to make a couple of passes in the furriest spot with it, so if you have a trouble area be sure to grab that one!} Apparently I’m not the only one who discovered how good lint rollers are for picking up fur- watch this adorable video from Scotch-Brite!
If you haven’t tried Scotch-Brite Lint Rollers, you need to pick one up at your local Walmart. They’re the only lint rollers made using Scotch™ adhesive, and they tear super cleanly so you don’t waste sheets. They are a fall and winter must-have as you pull your sweaters and thicker fabrics out- those types of clothing are typically a total fur and lint magnet, so they are just as much a wardrobe staple this time of year as that cute scarf you can’t wait to wear. That said, I’m excited to see that they can do much more than that! I love tools that I can use for more than one job- it makes my life way easier.
Now that I know my lint roller can do double duty, I’m excited to see what else it can do! Be sure to check out this site for ideas & inspiration for using your lint roller for more than just your clothes here!
