I love getting my kids involved in whatever craft I’m doing- especially if it’s something that we can display and cherish for years to come.
These DIY Yarn Pumpkins are so cute and so versatile- I used some of them to make a garland that we can hang in our home, and we used some as a display all on their own!
The sky’s the limit with what you can use these for- and the kids will have fun playing with them, too.

Orange Yarn {I used Red Heart Yarn in Carrot and Red Heart Yarn in Pumpkin}
Green Yarn {I used Red Heart Yarn in Green Tones}
Fishing Line or Twine {optional- for use if making a garland}
Book {mine was about 7″}
Sharp Scissors {I typically use fabric scissors for crafts like this.}
How to Make Yarn Pumpkins {And the Pumpkin Garland}
{You’ll be making 4 pumpkins at a time.}
1. Wrap your orange yarn around and around a book. {I wrapped mine about 100 times.}
2. Slide carefully off the book, making sure to keep the loop shape.
3. Cut 4 pieces of 12″ orange yarn. Use the orange yarn to tie the ends and then the opposite ends of the loop as shown. Tie tightly and double knot.
4. Using sharp scissors, cut in between each tied piece of yarn. {You’ll end up with four pumpkins.} Keep the pumpkin “tail” – the orange yarn you tied on- long. Hanging onto the tail, trim your pom poms into a pumpkin shape.
5. Cut 8 pieces of 12″ green yarn. Place two pieces of yarn across the tail and double knot the tail around the green yarn. Trim orange yarn to mix in, or keep for hanging. Repeat for other three pumpkins.
6. Gather all four pieces of green yarn that is attached to the pumpkin. Tie a loose slip knot to create a stem. Trim the stem.
7. {Optional!} Once you’ve finished your pumpkins, you can display them as is- or you can continue on to make the banner! To do that, cut a piece of fishing line and thread through the stems to hang them. Doing it this way makes it 100% movable and you’ll be able to slide the pumpkins to center them.
Whether you decide to leave the pumpkins as-is or make a banner, they make a fun way to decorate for fall! Since they’re pumpkins, they work as fall and Halloween decor, so you can leave them up all season long.
