Some of my favorite ornaments on our tree are the ones that were handmade. Whether Shane made it in kindergarten or I made it in preschool, those ornaments always bring back the memories of the first year they arrived on our tree and vividly remember making them to enjoy for years to come.
If you’re looking for a great way to spend time together this winter break {or want some really cute, great smelling ornaments for your tree}, look no further than these DIY Homemade Gingerbread Scented Salt Dough Ornaments. They are super easy to make and you likely have most of the ingredients at home already, so all that’s left is for you to make some memories!
Gingerbread Scented Salt Dough Ornaments
Ingredients:
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
2/3 cup water
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons ginger
1 drop brown food coloring {or 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa}
You will also need:
Hot glue & hot glue gun
Buttons
Parchment paper
Baking pan
Mixing bowl
Spoon/spatula
Straw
Directions:
1. Mix together your ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
2. Mix your ingredients together until you have a thick dough. {If you find it too sticky, add a little flour. If you find it too thick, add a little more water.}
3. Knead your dough for about two minutes.
4. Place your dough ball onto a piece of floured parchment paper and roll out 1/4″ thick with a rolling pin.
5. Cut out your ornaments with a Gingerbread Man cookie cutter and place them on a parchment paper lined baking pan. {You can definitely use any shape, but since these are gingerbread scented that’s what I went with!}
6. Now cut out holes at the top of each Gingerbread Man with the top of a straw.
7. Bake your ornaments in a 175 degree oven for 2 hours, flipping half way through.
8. Let your ornaments cool for 30 or so minutes.
9. Now you can use a hot glue gun and put a few buttons on your Gingerbread People.
10. Tie a piece of string or ribbon through your loop and your ornaments are ready to hang!
