The other day we were at the grocery store and we saw it- the Back to School section. It seemed so out of place alongside the display of pool noodles and sunscreen on clearance, but then I realized that we have less than a month before we go back to school!
Time is certainly flying, but we’re trying to make the most of the time we have left! We’ve been having a lot of fun lately, often hitting the museum or the park. Some of the most fun we have though has been in the little things, like sitting around watching movies together, playing board games, or making crafts.
I’m not a very crafty person- though I so wish I was- but Shane just loves a good craft project. Every once in awhile I remember a craft from my childhood that I am actually capable of doing, and the other day I remembered making boats out of my juice boxes! Since Shane’s been taking swim lessons several times a week, and we often swim as a family after, it seemed like the perfect easy summer craft for us.
Materials:
Empty juice box
Straw from juice box
Sheet of paper- any kind will do
Markers if desired
Tape {I used washi tape, but any kind will work!}
Directions:
1. When your kiddos finish their juice, save and rinse out the juice box, making sure not to squish it!
2. To make your sail, tape the straw to your paper {we used both regular notebook paper and the packaging from our pack of juice boxes} with the top bent down to make a triangle. Cut from the tip of the top of the straw across to the same place on the other side, making sure not to cut the actual straw.
3. Decorate the paper part if desired! Shane colored ours, but you could also use stickers or more washi tape.
4. Using sharp scissors, carefully poke one small hole right into the middle of the juice box {make sure to poke it in the side you want facing up, whichever that may be!}
5. Put the straw in the new hole on the top of the box and voila! You have a sailboat!
We made a couple of boats the other day and then after Shane’s swim lesson, we had a blast sailing them! Until Zac tried to drink our boats, that is.
You can use any juice box for this craft, but I recommend Juicy Juice. I grew up drinking it and I give it to my own boys because it’s 100% fruit juice with no added sugar, comes in several great flavors {perfect for my picky five year old} and is an excellent source of vitamin C. Plus, the box makes for a really cute sailboat!
