We can’t all do big things to be sustainable, but we can all do little things. It just takes small changes like turning off the water while sudsing up with shampoo, or recycling packaging whenever possible.
I try to do small things & teach my kids to do the same. I turn the water off while we’re brushing our teeth and I save jars & tubs to reuse for anything from storing small toys to recycling them as gifts!
In fact, I recently used a sauce jar that I had saved to make a Christmas gift- a Brownie in a Jar! It was super simple to make but makes a great gift, and you likely already have everything you need around your house!
You will need:
1 1/2 cups + 2 tbsp white sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 loosely packed cup of flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 recycled {clean & dry} pasta sauce jar
Decorations as you wish {I used scrapbook paper for the lid and rub-on stickers for the jar}
Directions:
Pour sugar into the jar, then press down to compact it
Do the same with the cocoa powder
In a small bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt
Pour into the jar, pressing down to compact
Top off with chocolate chips- make sure to fill the whole jar but leave enough room to close the lid! You may need to use slightly more or less than 1/2 cup, depending on how compact the rest of your ingredients are.
Then attach a tag with the following directions:
Empty mix into large bowl & add 1/2 cup butter and 3 beaten eggs. Mix until blended & bake in a lightly greased 9 x 13 inch pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
{Note that I am not the best crafter in the world, so if you’re good at crafts you can be as elaborate with decorating the jar as you’d like!}

I have always wanted to make these! I know they make great gifts, but they would also be great to make for my own house, instead of using boxed mixes. Thank you!
