Fun Outdoor Activities for Preschoolers {&Giveaway!}

Spring is here, and before it gets too hot we’ve been spending lots of time outside. Whether he hit the park or just play in our yard, we’ve been trying to get back on track with getting outside &attempting to soak up as much sunshine as possible.

We live in the middle of a city, so we don’t have a giant backyard. It’s big enough for a few trees & a deck, but we would have to remove the trees to fit a swingset, and we can’t fit any other fun stuff like a trampoline or bounce house. So we get creative & play with smaller toys. Here are some of our favorites:

Fun Outdoor Activities for Preschoolers from @NotQuiteSusie

1. Chalk. Sometimes we just draw scribbles, but usually we use the chalk to work on phonics. Shane has been learning to draw some things and even make a few letters!

2. Hopscotch. Okay, so this game uses chalk too, but it’s a whole separate activity & so much fun! While we draw the board & while he hops, Shane helps me count the squares. &It’s a good tool for fine-tuning gross motor skills too!

3. Bean bags. Shane is perfectly happy just throwing bean bags on the ground & running to pick them up, but we also play “The Color Game”. I put one different-colored bean bag on each cement square on our driveway, and then when I yell a color Shane runs to that square.

4. Throw & Catch. We have various tools to use for throwing and catching- a tennis racket & ball, two water rackets & a squishy ball, big plastic balls… if you can throw it without hurting the other person, we play with it. Shane is getting to be really good at throwing- and it lets him get all his throwing out so he doesn’t want to throw his inside toys as much.

5. Jumprope. Shane’s too short to use it by himself, but when Daddy & I each hold an end, he can actually jump over it {sometimes}! Even when he doesn’t succeed, he has fun trying- and as an added bonus, all that jumping tires him out.

Playing Hopscotch

As you can guess, Shane has a lot of energy. Some days I need some help to keep up {and some days I just want something yummy!} so I make myself a cup of coffee. People always make fun of me & joke that I really make a cup of Coffee-mate since I take my coffee white, but I can’t help it because it’s just so good.

How Coupons Work: From Paper to Digital {Guest Post}

Coupons are vouchers that are redeemable for cash. This translates into savings for an aware consumer, as you can piece together coupons to fit your needs. There are a few different types of coupons these days, but they all work off of this basic principal. No matter if your coupons are digital or paper, they are still redeemable for savings.

Paper coupons are a classic American convention, and mothers and daughters have cut them out together around the kitchen table since the fifties. However, digital coupons have begun to make a dramatic rise in recent years. In 2011, 47% of American Internet users reported that they had used digital coupons when shopping online. While digital and paper coupons work in similar ways, there are some differences that should be noted.

Cutting Coupons

Store Coupons

The way store coupons work starts with a pair of scissors. Cut out what coupons you want and store them in a safe place. When you take them to the store and present them to the cashier, the coupons are substituted for cash. For instance, if a coupon stated "Spend $75, Save 20% on Select Apparel + Free Shipping" the bearer of the coupon would exchange it for the cash value of 20% of all the clothes designated "select" by the store. The free shipping would imply that the clothes could be shipped somewhere without charge to the bearer of the coupon. The cash substituted by store coupons are covered by the store itself as a promotion of its own business.

Manufacturer’s Coupons

Manufacturer’s coupons are different from store coupons because they are redeemable by the store. If, for example, a customer redeemed a manufacturer’s coupon that said "Spend $75, Save 20% on Select Apparel + Free Shipping" then the store would not have to absorb the cost of the 20%. Instead, the store can mail in the coupon to the manufacturer, who will then reimburse the store for the amount lost from the coupon. However, they are charged a small fee for each coupon processed. Stores get millions of these every year, and continue to mail them in to the manufacturers to get reimbursed.

Digital Coupons

Digital coupons do away with the need for paper and scissors. They are uploaded on a card much like a debit card and redeemable at a cashier. The card is swiped like any other payment card and the coupon’s value is subtracted from your total. When shopping online, customers can use digital coupons to instantly reduce the price of goods they want. For example, if a customer had a digital coupon that said “Spend $75, Save 20% on Select Apparel + Free Shipping" then they would be saving 20% of any clothes they put into their "basket" and get free shipping when the transaction was completed. Digital coupons do not double the way other coupons sometimes do, but they can be stacked on occasion.

Coupons work to save you money. No matter if they are digital or paper, the value is there for you to take advantage of. Some coupons may be misleading, and a consumer should always read all the text on a coupon. If it is digital, be sure to fully read the information on the site you are downloading from.heart button

Gymboree Play & Music Coupon for Las Vegas Locals!

When Shane was 10 months old, we bought a house. One of the first things that I did was check out what baby/toddler activities were nearby. I found that there was a Gymboree Play & Music nearby so I scheduled a preview class just to see what it was all about. We instantly fell in love with the program and Shane took classes there for a long time. In fact, that’s where we met the other kiddos in Shane’s playgroup that we still meet up with every week!

Declare Your Sweet Independence with Hershey’s Simple Pleasures Chocolates!

What if you could eat your very favorite food- and feel good about it? What if I told you that if your favorite food is chocolate, you can?

Hershey’s Simple Pleasures chocolates have 30 percent less fat than the average leading milk chocolates and only 180 calories per 6 piece serving- that’s only 30 calories a piece! Best of all, the chocolates are rich & delicious, so you don’t even need the full 6 piece serving to satisfy your craving. {Although if you eat the whole serving {or two}, I totally won’t judge.} They come in Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Crème, Milk Chocolate with Vanilla Crème, and Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Crème.

But if the chocolates are that much better for you, then how do they taste? Well, I had the opportunity to try all three varieties recently & I never would have guessed that they had less fat or anything. If anything, they tasted even richer to me than regular chocolate! I don’t know if it’s because of the crème on the inside or what but they taste so indulgent! Justin & Shane agree- I actually had to start hiding the bags so that Shane would stop getting out his step stool to get them down from the pantry!

Declare Independence Tab

While Independence Day may be over, Hershey’s has a campaign on their Simple Pleasures Facebook page where you can declare your independence from something- like stress, work, etc. You can go to the Declare Your Sweet Independence tab on their Facebook page to declare your independence and enjoy life’s simple pleasures- I don’t know about you, but I’m declaring my independence from feeling guilty about indulging on chocolate!

While you’re there, you’ll be entered to win a $100 gift card, Hershey’s Simple Pleasures Chocolates, and other great prizes. &You can even download a $1.00 off coupon to try Hershey’s Simple Pleasures for yourself!

What are you declaring your sweet independence from?

What Keeps You Up At Night?

I haven’t been getting much sleep lately. It could be any number of things: the short nap I take at 8pm, the caffeinated soda I drink while I blog at 1am, or even the stress of meeting deadlines &making sure I’m keeping up on emails. But I think the main culprit behind my lack of sleep is this:

Happy Toddler on Tricycle

I know, he looks really cute & innocent, right? &During the day, he totally is. He’s two, so he has his moments, but for the most part this little guy is my best friend. We play together, learn together, and just hang out together all day while Daddy is at work & then with Daddy when he gets home. But when the sun goes down & the moon comes up, it’s like he turns into a whole new person.

First of all, getting Shane into bed is a huge production. It can literally take an entire hour- not including bathtime- to get him to finally lay down & try to sleep. He freaks out about brushing his teeth {despite having just done it that morning}, getting his pajamas on, everything. Then, he always wants one more book, and then when I cut him off at three he gets upset because apparently, he wanted three different books, despite having just chosen moments before the three that we read.

Once I finally get him to bed, I take a nap. After all, it’s exhausting going through that routine night after night. {&Since we cosleep, I’m already in bed anyway.} So I set my alarm for an hour & close my eyes for a few. But when that alarm goes off, it’s time to get up & “go to work”. I blog & clean the house from roughly 9pm to 3am, that way I can spend the day with Shane. But then, no matter how exhausted I am at 3am, I never seem to be able to fall asleep. &When Justin’s alarm starts going off at 3:30am, and continues for half an hour, I definitely can’t sleep.

Finally, when Justin gets up to get ready for work & turns his alarm off, my exhaustion catches up to me &I am usually able to fall asleep. By now, it’s 4am, so I turn over & shut my eyes and soon enough I’m dreaming.

Until Shane kicks me in the face.

I need my own room.

What’s keeping you up at night?

Be sure to download a coupon for Zzzquil to help you get some shut eye!
